Korean War

Again, decided to make a topic for this since there wasn't one previously.

I know hardly anything about the Korean War, and I'm also interested in it just like the Vietnam War. "The Forgotten War" seems to be a very well-fitting name for this war.

It does. I keep forgetting that it ever happened. Myself, I know it's the setting for M*A*S*H, but not a lot more than that.

I don't know anything about the actual combat, but I would imagine the weaponry used would be very similar to the weaponry used during WWII. The main thing I remember about it is MacArthur.

.

I don't really know much about it... I bet my uncle would have known.

Well beside the fact that MacArthur wanted to nuke the freaking Chinese and invade NK, I'd say the Korean War was pretty important.

He wanted to do what?!?!

Sounds like that would have ended very badly indeed.

Yeah, that was the final nail in the coffin of his career as far as I know. The nuke part, the United Nations managed to push the North Koreans almost all the way to the border before the Chinese intervention.

In some ways the war was very similar to WWII, in others it was very different. Helicopters and jets were maturing technology and prop planes were really showing their age, the confusing mess of tanks used in WWII was being merged into the familiar main battle tank and it was the first war America fought with desegregated troops.

It reminds me of Patton's suggestion to invade the USSR as soon as World War II was over. I guess it's a good thing generals weren't (and aren't) in charge of these things :P .

Still, it might make for an interesting alternate history. I wonder what would have happened?

I thought that was Churchill's plan?

The soviets had nuclear weapons by the time the war started, so it would probably end poorly.

Maybe it was; I don't know.

However, my comment on generals not being in charge of those decisions was probably a bit unfair if it was indeed Churchill's plan!

I'm pretty sure they both wanted to.

Well Churchill wasn't in charge in 1945, and even he knew it was a crazy idea.

The soviets didn't get a bomb till 1949.

It was indeed Churchills plan. Goal behind it was to "Liberate" Poland from the Soviets and then stop. Thank god it didn't happen though.

True, but I'm guessing that had the invasion happened, they would have pulled out all the stops to build one - even more than they did in reality.

But, yeah, it's very difficult to imagine that it ever would have happened.

They were already working on it by 1945, unless the western allies started nuking every major city in the USSR they couldn't have won, and after all that I doubt the Russians would ever forgive the west.

As soon as the West pulled out their troops the new Russia would turn anti-west and start building up for self defence and revenge.
