It's also interesting that it could be used to define scientifically what a 'kilogram' is. Currently, a 'kilogram' is defined to be the mass of a metal block called the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK). Not only does this seen a bit arbitrary, but it creates problems, because the IPK is gaining mass due to surface corrosion:
