Here's an Oddball Wall. PL posted one of these ages ago on The Brick Wall, and now I'm reviving the concept.


Here are the rules (mostly familiar; anything new is highlighted in red):

  • Main Combos - The 20 words consist of five groups of four, which do not overlap. The object is to identify the five groups, and the corresponding reasonings. Each group contains an 'oddball'; that is, a word which doesn't quite fit.
  • Invented combos - may consist of any number of words between 3 and 10. No credit will be given for invented combos which are subsets or extensions of main combos, with same or similar reasoning. However, if the reasoning is the same as for a main combo, reasoning points will still be awarded. Invented combos are capped at 20.
  • Scoring - 20 points are awarded for each main combo guessed correctly, and 20 points for each reasoning guessed correctly. 10 points are awarded for the reasoning for the oddball. Invented combos are worth 5 points per picture (though I may award bonus points for very good ones). Oddballs do not count for invented combos.
  • Number of guesses - You may make as many guesses as you want each day. However, guesses beyond the 4th are for main combos only (no invented combos), and 10 points are deducted for each guess beyond the 4th that does not successfully discover a main combo or its reasoning.
  • Guesses beyond the 4th are NOT intended for normal use! ONLY use them if you're sure you've found a main combo, but you've used all of your first 4 guesses for that day.
  • Questions - Removed, as it's not really applicable to this wall. However, I will give out clues every now and then if people are stuck.
  • Protecting a combo - Once a player identifies a main combo or its reasoning, that combo (including its oddball) is open only to that player for 24 hours or 3 guesses (whichever comes first). That player may also purchase additional protection at a rate of 1 point per 2 hours.
  • Prizes - 1 post for every 2 points scored, and a Green Ribbon will be awarded to the winner if their score exceeds the following:

    • 450 points if 2 people participate
    • 350 points if 3 people participate
    • 300 points if at least 4 people participate.

That's a correct main combo :) . The reasoning does have something to do with songs, but it's more specific. Oddball is incorrect.

The rest of the combo is open only to you for 24 hours or a further 3 guesses (whichever comes first).

Is the oddball that "3" uses numerics instead of letters?

And since I asked about the oddball and not the reasoning itself, does this count against the 3 guesses for the protected combo?

I think you might only want to give the oddball to someone if they have the reasoning for it; my suggestion is being that you've pretty much now given me a 50/50 chance at guessing the oddball.

Good idea. Otherwise, it's too easy to get the oddball by luck/brute force.

I've changed the rules: you get 10 points for the reasoning for the oddball, but none for the oddball itself. It's up to you whether or not you'd like to know that your guess for the oddball is correct (as this could help you, but could also help others).

Also, it's nothing to do with the names. The oddball will be easier to get when you know the exact reasoning.

Finite/Bank/Semantic/Barking: the forum walls games

Finite: There are generally a finite # of answers for regular combos
Bank: The walls serve as a word bank
Semantic: Each section of a wall serves some kind of "sign" or meaning to a much larger combo
Barking: what we do when we're chaotically trying to figure out a combo or reasoning

Odd one out is barking because it's a character trait, not a wall trait.

I'm getting more and more confused now. I have no clue.

Would the reasoning be "unconventional walls?"
