Just as Planned

Formula One is probably the most discussed sport on this forum, so I think it probably deserves its own thread.

Anyway, the 2012 season is coming to an end soon. So to start the topic going, do you think Alonso has any chance of catching Vettel this season, and what changes do you think will be made to the grid in the next season?

Personally, I think if Vettel finishes the remaining races, he'll win the title.

As for grid changes, we already know the McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus and Toro Rosso line-ups for next year. Glock is staying with Marussia, de la Rosa is staying with HRT and Hulkenberg is moving to Sauber. I expect Maldonado and Di Resta to stay with their teams, and probably Kovalainen (and if he doesn't stay with Caterham, I'd imagine he'll stay on the grid). As for the rest, I'm not as sure (although I still think Senna and Kobayashi will be on the grid next year).

Most of the drivers have chosen their car numbers for next year now, and they are as follows:

1 - :germany: Sebastian Vettel
3 - :australia: Daniel Ricciardo
5 - :germany: Sebastian Vettel (His permanent number, for if he loses his World Championship)
6 - :germany: Nico Rosberg
7 - :finland: Kimi Räikkönen
8 - :france: Romain Grosjean
11 - :mexico: Sergio Pérez
13 - :venezuela: Pastor Maldonado
14 - :spain: Fernando Alonso
17 - :france: Jules Bianchi
19 - :brazil: Felipe Massa
20 - :denmark: Kevin Magnussen
21 - :mexico: Esteban Gutiérrez
22 - :uk: Jenson Button
25 - :france: Jean-Éric Vergne
26 - :russia: Daniil Kvyat
27 - :germany: Nico Hülkenberg
44 - :uk: Lewis Hamilton
77 - :finland: Valtteri Bottas
99 - :germany: Adrian Sutil

A variety of reasons behind these choices. Some (e.g. the McLaren drivers) are choosing numbers they had success with earlier in their careers. Others (e.g. 'Bo77as') are choosing them for their marketing potential.

:uk: Max Chilton doesn't yet have a number, and nor do the Caterham drivers, who have yet to be confirmed.

Sad news. Jenson Button's father, John Button, has passed away aged 70 :( . He's suspected to have suffered a heart attack:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/25719879

He was at most of the races, so he gave a lot of post-race interviews. He seemed like a very likeable man, and he was definitely very close to Jenson, and a huge influence on his career. My deepest condolences go out to Jenson Button and the rest of his family during this very difficult time.

The latest reports on Michael Schumacher's condition, by the way, have done absolutely nothing to raise the spirits of the F1 world. He remains "critical but stable", but it could be weeks, or even months, before we hear anything else....

Well, brain injury specialist Dr Richard Greenwood has weighed in on the whole Schumacher situation - and what he has to say isn't very encouraging. Apparently, if he survives, he'll have to adjust to being "a very different person".

I assume he doesn't have any inside knowledge of Schumacher's case - he may be a brain injury specialist, but he's only got the same information as you and me to go on - but even so, this isn't what we wanted to hear :( ....

A couple more pieces of news:
  • Caterham are expected to announce their driver line-up for this year shortly, becoming the final team to do so. It's strongly rumoured that they will go with fan favourite :japan: Kamui Kobayashi and 23-year-old rookie :sweden: Marcus Ericsson.
  • Ron Dennis is back! He's replacing Martin Whitmarsh as McLaren CEO.
I also notice that he hasn't given up on "Ronspeak":

Ron Dennis

Can anybody translate :P ?

Force India have become the first team to launch their 2014 car!

http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/9127948/Force-India-Unveil-Radical-New-Livery

They have a new livery, which features black, as well as the familiar white, orange and green. I think that's perhaps one main colour too many....but still, I'd say it's an improvement over their old livery (which I thought was OK, but it never really stood out).

Some good news, at last. One month on from his accident, doctors are starting to wake Michael Schumacher from his coma:

I wish him and his family all the best, and hope it goes well :) !
