http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2012/10/13944.html ![]() The brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, has officially been opened. In November, it's due to host the United States Grand Prix, which returns to the Grand Prix calendar after a five-year absence. As part of the opening ceremony, the 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti (the most recent American F1 World Champion) drove a lap in a Lotus 79, of the type he drove in his Championship year. His verdict was that the circuit was "absolutely fantastic"; he noted that it was a bit slippery off the racing line, but that that was normal for a new circuit. Current Lotus test driver Jérôme d'Ambrosio later drove the circuit in a modern F1 car, and came to a similar conclusion: “It’s a very enjoyable layout with a couple of good opportunities for overtaking, some long, fast, sweeping ‘S’ bends and a few really satisfying, high-speed changes of direction similar to the ‘Becketts’ complex at Silverstone.” So, at long last, the United States has a dedicated, purpose-built F1 facility. It's been designed by Hermann Tilke, who did a great job with the Istanbul Park circuit, but his other tracks have been criticised as soulless, and as largely carbon copies of one another. This one, however, looks very good on paper: it features lots of elevation changes, and seems to be based on the Istanbul Park circuit. I'm looking forward to the first F1 race here. Bring it on! |
