http://planetf1.com/news/3213/8111459/Massa-Very-Close-To-New-Deal Brazilian Formula One driver Felipe Massa has been with Ferrari since 2006, and he was nearly World Champion in 2008, but in recent years, he has been outperformed consistently by team-mate Fernando Alonso, and hasn't even looked close to being championship-winning material. This year, for example, Alonso leads the World Championship on 194 points, while Massa is only 10th in the standings on a mere 51 points. In spite of this, Massa is reported to be "very close" to signing a new deal, which would see him driving for Ferrari again next year. I have just one question: WHY???? Massa was pretty lucky to stay on after a sub-par 2010 season, and extremely lucky to stay on after an even worse 2011 season. I was sure that this year was his final chance to demonstrate a major improvement in performance, but he's actually slipped even further back from Alonso. I get that Ferrari like to have one lead driver within their team, but we don't see Alonso winning the races, and Massa finishing 2nd after playing an effective supporting role. Instead, we sometimes see Alonso winning without Massa's support, and Massa finishing somewhere like 12th after being completely out of the picture. Other than complete insanity, I can only think of two reasons why Ferrari might be keeping him on: 1) There are major changes to the regulations in 2014. Ferrari might want to bring a new driver in then, and don't think it's worth getting a new driver for 2013 if he might just be there for one year; 2) I know I'm putting on my tin foil hat , but maybe Ferrari did something that would be considered scandalous if it was revealed to the general public, and Massa's involvement in it renders him unsackable? After all, if he did get fired, he might spill the beans to F1's officials, just as Nelson Piquet Jr did about Crashgate when Renault sacked him in 2009. Does anyone have any other ideas for why they might be holding on to him? |
