Time for another picture wall, I think!

Here are the rules (mostly familiar, with a couple of changes, mostly relaxations):
  • The 20 pictures consist of five groups of four, which do not overlap. The object is to identify the five groups, and the corresponding reasonings.
  • 25 points are awarded for each main combo guessed correctly, and 25 points for each reasoning guessed correctly.
  • Invented combos may consist of any number of pictures between 3 and 10, and are worth 5 points per picture (though I may award bonus points for very good ones). Invented combos are capped at 20.
  • No credit will be given for invented combos which are subsets or extensions of main combos, with same or similar reasoning. However, if the reasoning is the same as for a main combo, reasoning points will still be awarded.
  • Maximum number of guesses is 6 per day (this includes invented combos). However, the 5th and 6th guesses are for main combos only (no invented combos), 5 points are deducted if the 5th guess is totally incorrect (i.e. neither combo nor reasoning correct), and 10 points are deducted if the 6th guess is totally incorrect.
  • (The 5th and 6th guesses are NOT intended for normal use! ONLY use them if you're sure you've found a main combo, but you've used all of your first 4 guesses.)
  • I'll try to be generous with questions here. You can ask any question about the pictures at any time, and it won't cost you any points - subject to two rules:
    1) I reserve the right to refuse any questions which I feel are too general, or would give too much away.
    2) The question must be posted publicly in this topic. Questions asked anywhere else (for example, the PM system) will not be answered.
  • The contest continues until all main combos and reasonings (plus 20 invented combos) are found, or until Saturday, 6th October 2012 at 11:59pm GMT (whichever is earlier).
  • Prizes are 1 post for every 2 points scored, and a Posted Image Green Ribbon will be awarded to the winner if they score at least 375 points.

Those are the rules - now, here's the wall:

    Posted Image

    Questions answered:
The car in picture #6 is a Proton Savvy.
The confectionery in picture #7 is Thorntons' special toffee.
The person in #11 is Miley Cyrus (as Hannah Montana).
#12 is a Polish cheese called twaróg (or 'quark' in English).
The guy in #3 is holding a taser.
#17 isn't from any television show.
The car in #16 is an IndyCar. The chassis was built by Dallara, the driver is Danica Patrick, and the team is Andretti Green Racing.
The scientific names of the birds are:
    #1: Electron platyrhynchum
    #10: Serinus canaria domestica
    #14: Pica pica
The flower in #5 is a type of aster, known as a Blue Marguerite.
The radar in #15 isn't really for anything. It's just a graphic of a radar.

3 / 9 / 11 / 17: all people

Might be against the rules, but that's one.

It isn't against the rules (it's not a subset or an extension of any combo). It's a bit vague, but I'll let it pass on this occasion, and give you 20 points for an invented combo.

I like that one! It could very easily have been a main combo.

I'll give you 20 points for an invented combo, plus 10 bonus points.

Nice! I thought for sure you'd think that one was too general, but glad it worked.

Definitely the sort of thinking that'll get you the main combos.

As with Adam, I'll give you 20 points for an invented combo, plus 10 bonus points.

Also, a modification to the rules: should all five main combos be found before the closing date, I'll leave the wall open for invented combos, until either 20 invented combos are found or the closing date is reached.

They do indeed - I'll give you 20 points for another invented combo.

Hint: as well as the pictures themselves, look at the names of what's in the pictures. It should help with both main and invented combos.

I don't know whether these two clues will help, but:

9 and 18 are in the same main combo, but it has nothing to do with the USA.
10 and 14 are in the same main combo, but it has nothing to do with birds.

2/9/17/18 - All have stripes?

If it's not this, it might be:

2/8/9/18

Second one is correct. I'm surprised you got it so quickly: the stripes in number 8 are in the bar code :P .

Anyway, have 50 points for the first main combo :)

8 is too hard to see anything... in any case, I wouldn't have got it.

4/5/13/15: all have circles that are central parts of the picture

and if it's an invented combo you can possibly add 8 as well (the moon is circular)
Never mind, PL already made the one combo I found. No luck here. These seem way too specific to be able to get any of them (all the pictures are so different), and I can't tell what half the pictures are (7 and 12 are examples).

4/8/9/17/20: all have letters on them

I can't tell what 12 is either...I think it's dough, but I'm not totally sure.

Going to ask a question now. What is the name of the car in 6?

If you want to ask questions, you can. Unlike on my previous walls, no points are deducted for it. I'll provide as much information as possible; it may be relevant to main combos, or it may help with invented combos.

I'll allow that invented combo, because it isn't an extension of PL's 'letters' combo, but I won't allow any more with that reasoning, since we've had two already.

6/12/16/19 - All related to subatomic particles.

19 is Jimmy Neutron, and 6 is the Proton Savvy.

I'm not sure about the others, so I'm just guessing 12 and 16.

I assume you meant 12 :P ? Anyway, that's the correct combo.

By the way, you've used 4 guesses today.

Yeah, I did mean 12. I've edited my post to correct that.

So if I make any more guesses, they have to be main combos, and if they're wrong, I get deductions?

First one is a bit vague, but I think I can allow it.

I'm not sure I can allow the second one, though. Harry Potter isn't to do with presenting facts and figures :P
