We haven't had one of these for a while now, so here's a new Connecting Wall. I hope it's not too easy or too hard. The rules are the same as traditional walls, with a couple of exceptions. The words are all surnames of people. And whilst one of the names does not fit in any combo, another of them fits in two combos. Each member will receive half of their score in post count as prizes, and if the winner scores over 350 points, they will receive a Green Ribbon .Everyone gets 3 guesses per day. You score 25 points for one main combo and 25 for the reasoning behind it. Finally, I will allow up to 10 invented combos, which may contain any number of words (but no less than 3). You score 5 points for each word used in an invented combo, with a possibility of scoring bonus points for very good combos. Here's the wall (there are four main combos, as usual): ![]() Main Combos 1. Jackson/Harrison/Carter/Kennedy - All US Presidents. Combo and reasoning given by thecostumedanceparty (+50 points). 2. Karstens/Nicklaus/Friedel/Vonn - All US sportspeople of German descent. Combo and reasoning given by thecostumedanceparty (+50 points). 3. Bragg/Dirac/Powell/Chadwick - Winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Combo and reasoning given by CJ (+50 points). 4. Bond/Hamilton/Murphy/Carter - Surnames of top ranking English snooker players. Combo and reasoning given by thecostumedanceparty (+50 points). Invented Combos 1. Bragg/Dirac/Chadwick/Jones/Powell - all British physicists. Invented by thecostumedanceparty (+25 points). 2. Harrison/Friedel/Kennedy/Jackson - all surnames and given names. Invented by CJ (+20 points). 3. Bond/Jones/Hamilton/Carter - all surnames of fictional spies/detectives. Invennted by thecostumedanceparty (+20 points, +10 bonus points). 4. Murphy/Hamilton/Bond/Harrison/Jackson - all surnames of people who've appeard on "Britain's Got Talent". Invented by thecostumedanceparty (+25 points). 5. Jones/Jones/Jones/Jones: all surnames of British and Welsh snooker players. Invented by thecostumedanceparty (+20 points). 6. Hamilton/Jackson/Jones/Kennedy/Karstens: all baseball players. Invented by thecostumedanceparty (+25 points). 7. 8. 9. 10. Leaderboard thecostumedanceparty - 275 points CJ - 70 points Edited by Pyrite, Sep 29 2012, 07:11 PM.

Interesting twist there. What are the prizes? (for the Green Ribbon as well as posts, if they're going to be given out) |

Jackson/Harrison/Carter/Kennedy: all U.S. presidents Andrew Jackson Jimmy Carter William Henry Harrison John F. Kennedy You could even add Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton) who was a big name in U.S. politics, and ran in a presidential race but did not win. #2 Karstens/Nicklaus/Friedel/Vonn: all American sports players Jeff Karstens is a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Looks to be American. Brad Friedel is an American soccer player. Lindsey Vonn is an American alpine ski racer. Jack Nicklaus is an American professional golfer. And #3 (sorry for so many) Bragg/Dirac/Chadwick/Jones/Powell: all British physicists. William Lawrence Bragg was an Australian-born British physicist. William Heny Bragg (a different guy) was also a British physicist. Paul Dirac was an English theoretical physicist. James Chadwick was an English Nobel laureate in physics. He discovered the neutron. Francis Jones was a British physicist. Cecil Frank (C.S.) Powell was a British physicist who developed photographic method of studying nuclear processes. I guess that's my three guesses for today. The last one is confusing because there are more than 5 options.... think I even found a 6th, but he was German so I left him out. Don't know which one to eliminate. The first one is correct. For the second, the combo is correct. The reasoning is close, but not correct. The third I'll accept as an invented combo (you're on the right lines for a main combo, though). |

So, that leaves Bond / Hamilton / Jones / Murphy. I guess three of those are in a combo (together with one of the other 12), and one isn't in any combo. |

Not to be a pain, but CJ basically took my combo and got free points for it just by finding the reasoning. Shouldn't he get points only for the reasoning? I basically had the combo with one additional one and it seemed close enough... it took me some time to put it together. Not my call, but just pointing that out. @Adam: I did give you 25 points for the invented combo, though. Er...I don't know, I could give you an extra 10 bonus points for the invented combo. @CJ: Reasoning is almost right, as is the combo, but neither are completely correct. Edited by Pyrite, Aug 29 2012, 11:52 PM.

Well, all of the combos contain four words, so I think that guesses that contain any number of words other than four should be eligible for invented combo points only. It's Daniel's call, though. Now for an attempt at an invented combo: Kennedy / Harrison / Jackson / Friedel: Surnames which are also given names. Harrison as in Harrison Ford Jackson as in Jackson Pollock Friedel as in Friedel Rausch Kennedy is an Irish unisex given name (but I don't know of any famous examples) |

Whatever you want to do. It's your call. I'm itching to say the last combo as I think I know it. I will be very dissatisfied if someone takes it from me (that's just how I am). |

I've never liked the 3 guesses per day rule. Every wall we've had is either too easy or insanely hard, making 3 guesses not work for each. On the easy walls, 3 guesses are too many while the harder ones 3 guesses isn't enough. Plus, my impatience builds. Sorry for my awful bitterness in this game. If I'm a problem, seriously, just dock points from me. |

Well, I appreciate that that can be a problem, but I find it difficult to tell in advance how easy or how hard one of my walls is going to be. A lot of time, they turn out either much easier or much harder than I would have expected. As for the impatience, I'll introduce a system for that in my next wall. With that said, I don't normally use 3 guesses per day. I usually have 4 guesses per day on my walls, or I have 5 per day on bigger ones. I only use 3 guesses per day when I also have buying questions/clues (and I've decided I don't like that system, so I don't intend to use it on any future walls) |

Your earlier guess about the Snooker players was almost correct, although the reasoning is slightly more complicated and the combo isn't quite right. Also, I'm considering giving Adam the reasoning for the American sports players combo, as it was almost spot on... |
