Congrats, Katie! I've awarded you 50 posts (Adam, does she get a ribbon too?), and I'll set up an avatar gallery for contest-winning images. Can I start it off with your unicorn ice cream, and your flag from the Flag Contest?

Also, I'm very pleased with how successful this contest has been. There have been lots of good entries.

I'll use hers as my avatar if she wants for the span of a month.

As for the ribbon, I only wanted to give it out for entries that go far above the standards. I'm not sure anyone has achieved that goal. I think Katie is getting enough prizes for the entry she gave. In other words, I wanted it very hard to get a ribbon. I don't think anyone achieved this goal. To get it, one would have had to make most of the cone by scratch (like what Katie partly did), have it be perfectly drawn and colored with texture, and have a plausible explanation spanning a paragraph or so. I know it's a lot, but that's what a ribbon's worth in this contest.

I agree, I enjoyed these entries very much and it came right down to the wire.

CJ, yours was very good too. I just like how she drew out the unicorn and although it's not perfect, it has a decent ability and resembles icecream (chocolate and bubble gum eyes). I also think you should add your cone to the winning gallery as well CJ, since it came in second and is still of high quality (this race was really close).

I can see what you're talking about, but for the sake of future contests, I think that's too high a standard. Realistically, nobody's going to do all of that; at most, an 'excellent' entry might have one of those things.

Of course, ribbons should reward excellence and so be hard to get, but the bar shouldn't be set so high that nobody will ever win them. Otherwise, what's the point in having the system at all?

I might do that. I'm not sure, though.

Well, I think we should establish some standards then.

We probably should. It's easy to do for things like word games and connecting walls (we can just specify a points total or something). For these creative contests, it's harder.

One way to do it would be to judge each aspect (creativity, picture quality, explanation) out of 10, add these scores up to make a total score out of 30, and require the score to be above a certain number (for example, at least 29 out of 30) to award the ribbon.

I'd say 28/30 and I like the idea overall. You could rate creativity, presentation, and effectiveness as the three categories.

In this case, I'd give Katie's entry an 8 for creativity (unicorns have been bec oming a washed up idea on these forums, but still pretty innovative), 6 for presentation (it is not the best made in terms of neatness, more idea driven), and a 10 for effectiveness (great flavor, great description, likable entry). This total amounts to 24.

Even if you rank by three categories, voters can rate harder than others. My suggestion is to keep the ratings, but have a board of "ribbon rating" members each rate contest entries. Then we take the mean of all the ratings. If the mean is 28 or above, the creative work should be considered ribbon-worthy. It is time consuming to do this, but it is a far more efffective system for determining ribbons.

Well, since we're now discussing your idea in a separate topic, and the contest itself is over, I'll close this now.
