Or more accurately, how good is he at figuring out my nonsense. What am I talking about?

L represents length, say of a piece of twine or rope.

√4L

Does "√4L" mean "L times the square root of 4" or "The square root of 4L"?

If it's the former, then √4 = 2, so √4L/2 = 2L/2 = L.

If it's the latter, then √(4L) = (√4)(√L) = 2√L, so √(4L)/2 = 2√L/2 = √L.

No it's suppose to be the answer to how long is a piece of string. Never mind.
