And now for something completely different! This post will be a bit long, but it isn't complicated. In this contest, I'll ask you to predict the result of a future sporting event. Once that event takes place, I will post the results here, and award prizes to whoever comes the closest. Yellow Ribbons will also be given out to anyone who also predicts specified additional information correctly. I'll start with the German Grand Prix. I want you to predict which driver will win the race this Sunday. If you're not into Formula One, then the following information will be of use to you: http://www.formula1.com/teams_and_drivers/drivers/ - List of drivers. On the right is a table showing their standings in the championship. http://www.formula1.com/results/season/ - List of winners of previous races this year Simply name the driver (from the list in the first link) who you think will win. For bonus points, also have a go at guessing who will finish 2nd and 3rd. Prizes will be awarded as follows, depending on where the driver who you predict is going to win finishes: 30 posts if they win. 20 posts if they finish second. 10 posts if they finish third. 5 posts if they finish fourth or fifth. A Yellow Ribbon if your predictions for the top 3 are all correct. The person whose driver finishes the highest gets to run the next round. If more than one person guessed that driver, then whichever of those people asks to do the next round first can do it. So, that's it. If you have any questions, then feel free to ask. Otherwise, good luck! My predictions: 1st place: Lewis Hamilton 2nd place: Sebastian Vettel 3rd place: Kimi Räikkönen (By the way, before anyone asks, you are allowed to copy another person's prediction if you want to!) Edited by CJ, Sep 20 2012, 03:03 PM.

I see you copied mine. Is that because: a) you have confidence in my predictions; b) you didn't want to make your own one, either because you're too lazy or don't think you know enough about the sport; or c) because I said you could ?

I think I'm going to love this game (and completely fail at it, too )!1st place: Fernando Alonso 2nd place: Mark Webber 3rd place: Lewis Hamilton It's a tough choice between Alonso and Webber, but the Spaniard finished higher last year (although Webber got the poll). The McLarens have bee struggling lately, but Hamilton seems to fare well here. I wanted to back Nico Rosberg or Michael Schumacher, but I don't see either of them getting in the top 3. BTW: If Alonso won, but Hamilton came second and Webber third, would I still get the ribbon ?

Nope - your top three all have to finish in the top three, in the order given. Don't forget that the German Grand Prix alternates between two tracks. It's held at Hockenheim in 'even' years (2010, 2012, etc.), and at the Nurburgring in 'odd' years (2009, 2011, etc.), so last years' results might not be that relevant !But, yeah, the McLarens will only stand a chance if they don't go dropping wheel nuts. (Of course, I'm not going to do very well at this if they do !)

Well, he does have a 5-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox, which won't help him. He hasn't raced at Hockenheim before in F1, though he has raced there in lower formulae. I don't know how well he did there, other than that in a GP2 race, he got knocked off the track by the Crash Kid: |

I think it's safe to post unspoilered race results now . The podium was as follows, after Sebastian Vettel's penalty: 1st: Fernando Alonso ![]() 2nd: Jenson Button ![]() 3rd: Kimi Räikkönen ![]() As for Hamilton, he failed to finish .Nobody predicted the podium correctly, but Daniel did correctly predict that Alonso would win. Congratulations, Daniel - you get to choose the next sporting event, and run the next round! |

OK, here's the next one. Tomorrow, there's two Friends Life t20 matches taking place (Cricket): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Friends_Life_t20#Quarter-finals - That's the draw. The two quarter-finals are the bottom two: Match 1: Yorkshire Carnegie vs. Worcestershire Royals Match 2: Nottinghamshire Outlaws vs. Hampshire Royals Here is the Yorkshire Caregie squad. Here is the Worcestershire Royals squad. Here is the Nottinghamshire Outlaws squad. Here is the Hampshire Royals squad. I want you guys to predict the winners, plus the top scorers in each match. Here are the prizes: 30 posts if you correctly predict both results. 20 posts if you correctly predict one result. 10 posts if you correctly predict both top scorers, but neither of the results. 5 posts if you correctly predict one top scorer, but neither of the results. A Yellow Ribbon if you correctly predict both results, and the two top scorers in both matches.Right, here's my predictions: Match 1: Yorkshire Carneige, with Johnny Bairstow top-scoring.Match 2: Nottinghamshire Outlaws, with Alex Hales (though I really wanted to pick James Taylor) top-scoring.As always, you can copy other member's predictions. Well, both matches have been played. Here are the results: Match 1: Yorkshire Carnegie, with Phil Hughes (of Worcestershire Royals) top-scoring.Match 2: Hampshire Royals, with Niel McKenzie (of Hampshire Royals) top-scoring.Therefore CJ is the winner, as he correctly predicted two results to my one. Congratulations, CJ. You can do the next one. |

Yay . Still no Yellow Ribbons, but then, they are meant to be very hard to get. Now, the next one relates to the Olympics. On Saturday, the men's road race (Cycling) will take place, and I'd like you to predict who will come away from it with a gold medal. The provisional start list is here (it's very long!): http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/534036/london-2012-olympic-games-men-s-road-race-start-list.html The rules are essentially the same as my F1 round, so: 30 posts if your prcedicted gold medallist wins gold .20 posts if they win silver .10 posts if they win bronze .5 posts if they finish in the top 10, but outside the medals. A Yellow Ribbon if your predictions for the gold medallist, and either the silver medallist or the bronze medallist, are correct. (I think since the field is much larger than that for the F1 race, it'll be nearly impossible to predict all three medallists correctly!) Here are my predictions: : Mark Cavendish (Yes, I'm biased) : Edvald Boasson Hagen (Yes, I'm definitely biased) : Matthew Goss

OK. Tomorrow is the final of the Men's 200m Individual Medley in Swimming (still in the Olympics). Here is a list of the swimmers taking part, with their lanes in the final, and their times in the semi-final. Same rules as for the first round (the F1 round), with correctly predicting the top three in the correct order getting you a yellow ribbon. Here's my predictions: - Ryan Lochte - Laszlo Cseh - Thiago Pereira I've decided not to back Michael Phelps, which I might regret later .

Well, neither of us predicted the winner (Michael Phelps) correctly, although CJ got all of the top three swimmers correct (just the top two were in the wrong order) and also correctly predicted that Cseh would finish third. So CJ wins the round. |

Argh, so close! In the football, the Men's Gold Medal match takes place in two days' time, and Brazil faces Mexico. See if you can predict what the score will be. For a Yellow Ribbon, also predict who will score first. This page has records of each team's previous matches in the Olympics, as well as listing each nation's players: http://www.london2012.com/football/event/men/match=fbm400101/index.html My prediction is: Brazil 3 - 1 Mexico , with Leandro Damiao scoring first.

I didn't specify any prizes, other than the Yellow Ribbon >_< . Here we go: 30 posts for correctly predicting the score 20 posts for correctly predicting how many goals the winning team scores (not applicable if it's a draw decided on penalties) 20 posts for correctly predicting the winner of the penalty shoot-out (not applicable if there isn't one) 10 posts for correctly predicting the winning side (or correctly predicting a draw decided on penalties) |

Football again. There are eight Premier League fixtures on Sunday: Swansea v West Ham Aston Villa v Everton Man Utd v Fulham Norwich v QPR Southampton v Wigan Sunderland v Reading Tottenham v West Brom Chelsea v Newcastle I'm not going to ask you to predict the results of all of them; that would be a bit much work . Instead, I'd like you to predict the scores of up to five matches. You receive 10 posts for each one you get right, and a Yellow Ribbon for correctly predicting at least three scores. This site might be helpful. It contains head-to-head comparisons of all the teams featured here: http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/head_to_head.sd Here are my predictions: Aston Villa 1 v 1 Everton Man Utd 3 v 0 Fulham Norwich 1 v 0 QPR Sunderland 0 v 0 Reading Chelsea 3 v 2 Newcastle |

The results of the games were as follows: Swansea 3 - 0 West Ham Aston Villa 1 - 3 Everton Man Utd 3 - 2 Fulham Norwich 1 - 1 QPR Southampton 0 - 2 Wigan Sunderland P - P Reading (Postponed - due to waterlogged pitch) Tottenham 1 - 1 West Brom Chelsea 2 - 0 Newcastle Nobody got any right at all, with the possible exception of Sunderland vs. Reading. Anyone who wants to can host the next round; it can be either more football, or a different sport. |
