A very minor case of serious brain damage

A few days ago, my sister made a connecting wall for me to do. With some help, I was eventually able to solve most of it, although I had to be told the reasoning behind the last (automatic) group. Now, I'm sharing the connecting wall, to see how people here can do. It uses the same format as my previous connecting wall (so, 9 groups of 4, with one word from each group in each quarter). However, I think this wall is even harder, so I will increase the prizes to 15 points per main combo, with 20 points for the reasoning, and 40 points for the reasoning I wasn't able to get. I will allow invented combos, including ones which do not have one word in each quarter, but this time, invented combos do count towards your guesses for each day (not counting them was too confusing). In order to compensate for this, I am increasing the number of guesses per day from four to five. Also, I will allow at most 15 invented combos in total. Once again, the winner is the first player to reach 200 points. Once somebody wins, the contest will close, and prizes will be awarded (1 post per point, up to a maximum of 200). After that, I will leave the topic open in case anybody wants to complete the wall, but it will then just be for fun, rather than for points. Finally, Penguin (if she comes back and sees this) is not allowed to enter. She wrote the thing, after all . Now, here is the wall: ![]() Main combos 1) Letter O's / Washers / Plug / Peas - items purchased in the Two Ronnies' "Four Candles" sketch. (Combo and reasoning given by PL-Stokie; +35 points) 2) Favourite / Facetious / Quaternion / Mozambique - All use each vowel once (Combo and reasoning given by thecostumedanceparty; +35 points) 3) Can / Have / Must / Know - All auxiliary modal verbs. (Combo and reasoning given by thecostumedanceparty; +35 points) 5) Colour / Be / Pod / Glyceride - All can be prefixed with "Tri-". (Combo and reasoning given by PL-Stokie; +55 points) 6) 7) 8) 9) Invented combos 1) Gâteau / Jet / Colour / Cat - "Black" (Invented by PL-Stokie; +15 points) 2) Gâteau / Can / Peas / Candle - Geometric shapes (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 3) Gâteau / Lime / Pepper / Peas - All types of food (Invented by PL-Stokie; +15 points) 4) Pea / Be / Nott / Know - Heterographs (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 5) Lime / Rookwood / Marine / Gibbon - Names of towns (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 6) Water / Washers / Marine / Amazon - Water (Invented by PL-Stokie; +15 points) 7) Shadow / Fear / Cat / Water - Fears (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 8) Water / Be / Clyceride / Lime - Chemistry (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 9) Shadow / Jet / Marine / Cat - "Sonic the Hedgehog" characters (Invented by PL-Stokie; +15 points) 10) Spear / Water / Jet / Marine - Military tactics (Invented by thecostumedanceparty; +15 points) 11) 12) 13) 14) 15) Scores thecostumedanceparty: 185 PL-Stokie: 150 |

That would have made a good main combo! Unfortunately, it isn't one, but it's definitely worth 15 points for an invented combo. Well done! |

The 'four quarters' rule only applies to the main combos, not to invented ones. I can allow both of those as invented combos, though. Well done! Now, here's your first clue for the main combos:

Not quite, but you are along the right lines. Keep thinking of vowels. I think that's quite a help, and you've now done some of the work towards that combo, so if someone else gets the combo/reasoning, I'll split the prize for the reasoning 50-50 with you (or, rather, 10-10). |

You're very close with the combo. The reasoning is actually quite different, though. |

This one doesn't work for the quadrants, but it works on its own as an invented combo. pea/be/nott/know: heterographs -pea/pee -be/bee -nott/not -know/no |

Unfortunately, that's not it. By the way, 'color' vs. 'colour' isn't important for this wall; the combo will still work with either. 'Favourite' vs. 'favorite' is important, though: the combo no longer works if the American spelling is used. |

Correct! The reasoning is close enough for me to accept. Those are all items that were on the shopping list (despite the candles' prominent appearance, Ronnie Barker wasn't shopping for them.) Have 35 points .

Sorry, but that's not a combo. To be honest, I think the connection is too loose even to allow it as an invented combo. Keep trying, though! |

These just seem out of ordinary words (can/have/must/know) along with "be," although "be" wasn't right, so I figured "know" might take its place. But it does seem strange that can/have/must/be are all auxiliary verbs. Yeah, this is where an English major gets you. I can just tell by the use of the words that they belong together somehow. I will think... Edited by thecostumedanceparty, Jun 21 2012, 03:01 PM.

Funny how that's what helped you to get the combo, when the reasoning behind the combo has nothing to do with English. Language, yes, but not English language. |
