Not quite a connecting wall, v1

Some of you will be familiar with the "Connecting Wall" contests that have been going on in this forum. You get a grid with, say, 16 words, which can be grouped into four groups of four, and the goal is to identify the four groups and work out what connects them. However, someone (I can't remember who), realized that it was just as much fun for people to invent their own combos as it was to try and find the pre-existing ones, and so inventing imaginative combos became a secondary goal of the connecting walls.

But, since inventing combos is good fun too, why not start a contest built around it? Here we have a smaller wall, consisting of nine words:

Posted Image

The goal is simple: take some of these words, and try to form some kind of link between them. To take an example of what I'm talking about, for those of you who don't know:

Drive / Crash / Loop - all to do with Hot Wheels toys.

There are no main combos here - let your imagination run wild!

Now, for the boring bit:
  • You can enter as many times as you want, but I will only judge your best entry.
  • Your combo must consist of at least 3 words, but can consist of as many as you want (up to all 9).
  • Your combo must have one, single connection that unifies all elements. No points for a series of connections between individual elements, so don't try to disguise two 3-word combos with one word in common as one 5-word combo.
  • This contest closes on Wednesday, 6th June 2012 at 11:59pm GMT. I will then judge your combos based on how created they are, and how strong the links are (so, I'd choose a strongly-connected 4-word combo in preference to a vaguely-connected 6-word combo.)
  • The prizes are as follows:
    • 1st place: 3n2 posts
    • 2nd place: 2n2 posts
    • 3rd place: n2 posts
    • Everyone else: n posts
(Here, n is the number of words in my favourite of your combos. There are big bonuses for winning with longer combos, but don't overestimate the importance of length. 3rd place with a 3-word combo will score 9 points - which is the same as a 9-word combo outside the top 3!)
Is that clear? If so, start inventing combos - and good luck!

First off, I'd like to request that I don't receive any extra posts for this.

Anyway, here's my combo:

Green/Set/Ball/Drive/Out/Star/Loop - Tennis

Set, Ball, Out, Loop should all be obvious.
Green as in the grass.
Drive is a tennis shot (as is Loop).
And tennis stars are the most famous players.

And maybe Crash for crashing out of a competition.

Wow. 7 words, and a reasonably good link. I think that'll be difficult to beat!

Also, your request not to receive extra posts will be granted.

Drive/Green/Ball - Golf
Ball/Out/Star/Set - First letters spell out BOSS

drive/ball/out/derby/stars: Homerun derby (it's part oif baseball if you don't know; you hit and drive the ball out to the stars and try to do it over and over again; the star part is metaphorical for "far and out of the stadium")

Drive/Ball/Out - Cricket

For those who aren't familiar with cricket: a cricketer plays a cover drive shot, but the ball is caught, so he's out.

Just throwing another one out there...

Wow, I forgot to judge this!

:gold-medal: 1) PL-Stokie: Green/Set/Ball/Drive/Out/Star/Loop - Tennis (I was impressed that anyone could connect 7 words!)
:silver-medal: 2) thecostumedanceparty: drive/ball/out/derby/stars: Homerun derby
:bronze-medal: 3) HeroofDarkness; Drive/Green/Ball - Golf (Not her longest combo, but I feel that the links in this one were stronger)

Certainly a common theme in these combos! Normally, PL would do the next one, but since he's on study leave, Adam can do it instead.

I'm still mystified as to how the words "loop" fit into tennis.

It's a type of tennis shot, characterised by heavy topspin.

OK, I've tried to avoid making them too disimilar.

Note / Print / Spell / Letter / Symbol / Character - Microsoft Word

You can use it to write notes and letters (in a font called Symbol if so desired), and then print them. It will help you to spell correctly, and introduce you to a paperclip character.

Game. Set. Match!

No point for me to even try.

6/9 words with a good reasoning. Good start, but let's see what others can come up with.

I'd actually prefer if they were dissimilar. I find note and letter too close in meaning...

Argh...I forgot!!

Well, both entries were really good, so it's a tough decision...

:gold-medal: 1) CJ: Note / Print / Spell / Letter / Symbol / Character - Microsoft Word - 108 posts
:silver-medal: 2) HeroofDarkness: Note / Print / Spell / Letter / Symbol / Character / Link - Book about Zelda - 98 posts

So CJ, you can do the next one.

TBH, I thought HoD would win!

Anyway, here's the next one. Ten words this time, instead of nine:

One final note: 'piggyback combos' (that is, just extending someone else's combo instead of forming your own, and using the same or similar reasoning to them) won't be accepted.

Good luck!

It did take me a while to decide.

Information/Class/Egpyt - An Egyptology Class.

Air/Extra/Beach/Class - All followed by "time".
