Some of you may have heard of a quiz show called Only Connect; I started a topic on it yesterday. I decided that one of the games, the Connecting Wall, would make a good contest, so let's try it out!

The rules of the Connecting Wall are as follows: the wall contains 16 words, which you must group into four categories of four, which are connected in some way. You might want to try a couple out on the site before you attempt this one, so that you get the idea. The ones on that site are very hard, though; hopefully, this one will be a little easier, but I'm hopeless at balancing my contests, so you never know :P !

Anyway, the rules are as follows:
  • When guessing a group, you must provide all four words which you think belong in the group.
  • If your 4 words do belong in a group, you receive 20 posts. For a bonus 10 posts, you can also tell me (in the same post) the reason why those words are connected. If you guess this incorrectly, or do not guess at all, then other people may clam the bonus posts by telling me what the connection is.
  • Not a rule, but a recommendation: don't tell me what the connection is unless you're sure that all four elements of the group are correct. Not only do you receive no credit for the connection unless the group itself is correct, but posting the connection may help other people to form the group correctly!
  • In order to prevent one person from dominating, or someone from winning without any skill by simply running through all possible combinations, you are limited to four guesses per day for the groups themselves. However, you may make as many guesses as you like for the bonus points, once they become available.
  • If you're feeling extremely confident, there is a Big Bonus available. If you use all four of your guesses for one day to solve the entire puzzle in one go (getting all four groups, plus all four connections on your first guess), you receive an additional 80 posts, on top of the 20 from each group, and the 10 from each connection.
  • The contest is open until Saturday, 4th May at 11:59pm GMT.

So, is that clear? If not, feel free to ask on what you're not sure about. If so, here are your 16 words. See if you can form four groups of four out of them:

    Good luck!

1st group: Society, Depression, Escape, Plains - all can be prefixed by "The Great ______". Answered correctly by HeroofDarkness.
2nd group: Shift, Home, Control, End - all keys on a keyboard. Answered correctly by HeroofDarkness.
3rd group: Head, Raft, Neck, Actor - guessed correctly by thecostumedanceparty. Adding "Red" to the beginning of each word creates four new words - guessed by HeroofDarkness.
4th group: Atom, Logic, Time, Mail - automatic as the other three have been guessed. All types of bomb - guessed by thecostumedanceparty.

I'm going to say time/atom/control/logic are all one category because time can be measured in atoms (small amounts) and must be controlled in order to stay logic.

If that doesn't work, then time/logic/escape/control because you can also escape in time.

Third guess: time/atom/control/escape for similar reasons.

Fourth: time/atom/logic/escape

You were actually quite close with one of those (albeit for the wrong reason). Try again tomorrow!

1. time/shift/escape/control- we shift time, control it, then escape within it

2. time/shift/control/logic- same as above, just concentrating on logical time rather than escaping in it

3. atom/depression/end/society- The Great Depression, atomic bomb, end of the world all negative effects on our society

4. ?

You're very close, once again, with your fourth guess. Three of those four are in the same group (but for a different reason from the one you gave).

Great try, though!

See, now the problem is that someone can come and take those three answers and get it after I've done 3/4 of the work...

And I think I know it now...

Ah, I understand your concern. I don't want this contest to end up being run over the PM system, and I certainly don't want that extending to other contests, but, at the same time, what I said may have given everyone else an unfair advantage (had you not hidden your guesses), so I shouldn't have said it.

Perhaps, for future contests, we should say that the host shouldn't respond to PM'd guesses, but also shouldn't comment other than to say whether a guess is correct or incorrect. (Or, if they're giving general clues out, it should be at the start of the day before anyone has guessed)

That sounds fair to me.

I'll guess four tomorrow and reveal my fourth guess I had today as an extra choice mixed in (5 in all). Then it will be fair and no harm lost.

Another 30 posts for you :) .

I suppose I was a bit nasty. Sometimes, in the original show, they put five words that could belong in the same category, to throw the contestants (one of the words is from a different category, and they have to work out which one). That's what I did here :P .

Your first guess is correct, but the reason isn't. 20 posts for you.

Well, that leaves only one group open that anyone can take... :(

Does the reason have anything to do with fishing?

Yeah, I just thought of that. Now that three of the groups have been guessed correctly, we automatically have the fourth (Atom / Logic / Time / Mail), so I think it's a bit unfair to allow someone else to claim 20 posts for it essentially for free. Therefore, I will be withdrawing the prize for guessing the fourth group.

However, so that this doesn't affect the total prize available, I'll increase the prize for each of the two remaining reasons from 10 posts to 20 posts.

And, no, it isn't anything to do with fishing.
