A very minor case of serious brain damage

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1067390_indy-500-winner-dan-wheldon-dies-in-vegas-300

British racing driver Dan Wheldon, who won the world-famous Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011, was severely injured today in an horrific, fiery crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 33-year-old was unable to extricate himself from his car, but was later removed from the wreckage and airlifted to hospital. Tragically, he has since died of his injuries; I wish to offer my condolences to all who knew Wheldon during these very difficult times.

The crash, which involved a total of 15 cars, was one of the worst motorsport pile-ups in recent memory:

Even before the race, other drivers such as Danica Patrick had expressed concerns about safety. With the 225mph speeds attained in practice for the race, and with high-profile drivers starting towards the back of the grid, there were fears that something like this may happen. Hopefully, the race organisers will learn from this, Wheldon's death will not have been in vain, and something will be done to improve the safety of Indy racing (and motor racing in general) to prevent a similar tragedy from happening in the future.

I know :( .

The other thing about this particular track they were racing on is that it was 60% shorter than the tracks they normally use. It was really unsuitable for a field of 34 of those cars. Sadly, it seems that they realized too late to save one of their best drivers.

I must admit, I hadn't noticed that before....and I can't notice it now. Maybe it's too quiet.
