Acoustic 'cloaking device' shields objects from sound

Scientists have demonstrated a 'cloaking device', which makes objects impossible for sound waves to detect. The device, which consists of plastic sheets with arrays of holes in them, was originally inspired several years ago by the idea of Harry Potter-esque 'Invisibility Cloaks'. However, it wasn't long before scientists discovered that all the mathematics behind this (for bending light waves around an object, so that it would appear to an observer as if it were not there) applied equally well to sound waves.

The theory for this 'acoustic cloaking' has been around since 2008, but it's only been put into practice this year. One day, it could be put to use in a range of applications, from acoustic design for concert halls to submarines that cannot be detected by SONAR.

Seems interesting!

Sounds interesting, this could be very handy for submarines.

Here's a thought: I wonder whether this could work against government mind control rays :P ? Mind you, one of these shields would probably look even more ridiculous than a tin foil hat!

That is so cool! I hope they test this out someday (well, on TV)!
