A very minor case of serious brain damage

Formula One driver Robert Kubica is undergoing surgery for serious injuries, which he sustained whilst competing in a rally in Italy this morning. He crashed his Skoda Fabia into a church wall at high speed, breaking multiple bones in the process (although exactly which bones were broken varies from report to report). Fortunately, Kubica's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, but he will most likely have to miss the start of the Formula One season next month, and given that he had to have 18 titanium bolts installed in his left arm after a Formula 3 accident in 2003, there are fears that this crash could bring a premature end to his racing career.

I hope that Kubica recovers fully from his injuries and is eventually able to return to Formula One.

I hope so too.

There were fears that his right hand may have to be amputated. Fortunately, it appears that this is no longer a risk, although the operation to re-construct his right hand took seven hours, and was carried out by seven doctors, split into two teams.

They're also expecting that it will take him one year to recover. This would presumably mean not racing at all in this season.
