I love this time period as well. It's fascinating. Rome was started on about seven hills, not Romulus and Remus.

Well, the idea that Romulus and Remus were raised by wolves just seems absurd, and doesn't say much for the credibility of the rest of the legend.

It's a real pity our academic knowledge from this period was lost to us, and not rediscovered until the start of the Renaissance. Who knows how our technological development might have been were it not for that?

I know what you mean there. I never would have been able to take Early Western Civilization.

Yeah...when the Great Library in Alexandria was destroyed, and then the Roman Empire fell, we lost all of that accumulated knowledge.

It's amazing how durable their buildings were. Quite a lot still exist (albeit in ruined form) 2000 years later!

Yeah. Roman concrete was pretty durable too, much more so than modern concrete.

Well there might not have been much. With so much cheap labour around, why bother with machines?

One thing that I learned recently was that a lot of Greek marble statues weren't plain white (as they appear today, and as they're often depicted), but were painted in bright colours.

Back in the day, the Parthenon would have looked something like this:
