A very minor case of serious brain damage

This topic is about gold; one of those elements that gets everyone excited. Of course, it's been used in jewellery and as a store of value throughout history, but it does have a variety of other modern uses. For example, the McLaren F1 used gold foil as a heat shield in its engine.

Here's a gold ring, stamped with the chemical symbol, atomic number, and relative atomic mass of gold:

Kind of a shame that we'll be disrupting the seabed...

Interestingly, it is possible to make metal-ligand complexes containing gold, although it is very unreactive.
