Dark energy

A very minor case of serious brain damage

What is dark energy and where does it come from? Nobody knows, but it's said to be causing the universe to expand at an ever-increasing rate. What does this mean for the future of the universe?

Discuss this recent and exciting area of research here.

I've learned this in astronomy. You can't really tell because no one knows. But I believe it makes up 70% of our universe (maybe more).

Yeah - it is an awful lot.

What I'd like to know is, whether it'll continue to cause the universe to expand at an ever-increasing rate, or whether it'll slow down and stop one day, or maybe even reverse?

My theory? Smaller particles than quarks (and their different "flavours") that can't be detected by normal means, but detected as extra energy or mass after fission, which for some reason, scientists detect an amount of energy released that cannot be explained through known particle fission.

Remember, the smaller the particle, the larger the energy produced from nuclear fission, and the expansion of the universe is indeed caused by dark matter, I believe that's where we'll find it. In smaller particles that we haven't found yet.

Intersting theory. The thing is, would that be enough to account for all the dark energy? I would guess it only would be if it also arises through processes other than fission, which is, of course, entirely possible, especially considering we don't really know anything about the nature of these particles yet!

Well, given that quantum physics still has a long way to go, and realistically, we're just scratching the surface of things, I believe someday we would be able to account for all that extra energy.

Wow nice theory. I agree.

According to this, it makes up at least 73% of the universe. (Though I can't find it on there...)

Interesting - I wonder what it is?

NASA's working on a special new telescope to try and find out - but they think they could discover up to 3,000 exoplanets with it too:

Socially Confused

In was listening to a guy on the radio talk about this, apparently a scientist that studies this thing, all he did was guess what it might be and left everyone still none the wiser after wards lol
