http://www.livescience.com/technology/destroy_earth_mp.html This article lists ten different ways in which the Earth could be destroyed eventually. Some are natural, some are man-made; some are plausible, others not so much. I'm not sure which was my favourite...but I did like the Von Neumann machines .

Interesting article . If Einstein were wrong and E equalled MC3, we'd already be gone thanks to the atom bomb in Hiroshima! One other thing that might succeed in making us extinct (rather than destroying the planet) - probably by accident - is to bring the moon to Earth and create a new continent with it. If that doesn't go wrong and cause global catastrophe, an asteroid that would've otherwise been intercepted by the moon might hit us instead. |

Well, even if the impact didn't destroy the Earth, the loss of the Moon would still cause problems. The first noticeable effect would be a massive reduction in the tides (there would still be smaller tides exerted by the Sun). After that, the Earth would become gravitationally unbalanced and tilt over within a million years or so, causing one hemisphere to be in constant sunlight, and the other to be in constant darkness, making life impossible. |

I know . It's probably not possible yet, but I can see it being possible (but completely inadvisable) to knock the Moon out of orbit using rockets. |

It is crazy. The rockets would have to be massive, though. Alternatively, if an asteroid was on a collision course with the Earth, I guess you could use a rocket to knock it out of the way...and put it on a collision course with the Moon instead .It'd have to be a very big asteroid, though, otherwise you'd just get a crater (like the thousands of others on all of the rocky planets and their satellites). |
