"The Blue Marble" is a famous photograph of the Earth taken on December 7, 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft en route to the Moon at a distance of about 29,000 kilometers (18,000 statute miles). It shows Africa, Antarctica, and the Arabian Peninsula.

Original caption from NASA: "S103-E-5037 (21 December 1999)--- Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery recorded this rarely seen phenomenon of the full Moon partially obscured by the atmosphere of Earth. The image was recorded with an electronic still camera at 15:15:15 GMT, Dec. 21, 1999.".

:o Wow...it doesn't even look round! I imagine it's because the light rays are bent (refracted) by the Earth's atmosphere.

Yeah. It's in false colouring, though; I'd like to see a true colour photo as well.

Ah, right. Doesn't look as nice, though :( . Maybe it's just the poor quality of the pic.

yeah....

Maybe it's better to see the structure from space, which is more than half the pics I found on Google

It probably is. Then, you'd certainly get a much better overhead view of it :P .

There's this urban myth that you can see the Great Wall of China from space, but I've heard that it isn't actually possible to do this. Does anyone have a picture to prove/disprove this?

Just looks like a very bright star. It's interesting to see what it looks like, but I prefer the images of it taken from the Moon :P .

I know. It doesn't quite have the same impact as the "Blue Marble" picture, but it's amazing that the Earth is visible at all from there.
