How far is it?

My mom and I were wondering how far a light year (ly) was. I looked up in the dictionary and it said 5,880,000,000,000 (5.88 trillion) or 5,878,630,000,000 miles according to Wiki.

Well I used the Crab Nebula as an example. It's 6,500 ly from Earth.

So it's 38,220,000,000,000,000 (3822.0 quadrillion) miles :P

Anything you want me to check?

Wow :o .

How about the edge of the visible universe? (which should be 13.7 billion light years away)

Closer than I thought, actually. I'd assumed it was some random object much further away!

A lot of things seem closer than they really are ;)

Is that because they're moving away from us due to the expansion of the Universe (so they're further away now than they were when they emitted the light that we're now receiving), or am I talking nonsense here :P ?

Although, I suppose even 900 light years is incomprehensibly far away :P .
