As with the China topic, this would be better in Social Sciences, I think. Move it back if you disagree. It's one of my favourites too, but I suppose I'm biased, since I've lived there for all my life .

Scotland the Brave... Let Italy boast of her gay gilded waters Her vines and her bowers and her soft sunny skies Her sons drinking love from the eyes of her daughters Where freedom expires amid softness and sighs Scotland's blue mountains wild where hoary cliffs are piled Towering in grandeur are dearer tae me Land of the misty cloud land of the tempest loud Land of the brave and proud land of the free Enthroned on the peak of her own highland mountains Te spirit of Scotia reigns fearless and free Her green tartan waving o'er blue rock and fountain And proudly she sings looking over the sea Here among my mountains wild I have serenely smiled When armies and empires against me were hurled Firm as my native rock I have withstood the shock Of England, of Denmark, or Rome and the world But see how proudly her war steeds are prancing Deep groves of steel trodden down in their path The eyes of my sons like their bright swords are glancing Triumphantly riding through ruin and death Bold hearts and nodding plumes wave o'er their bloody tombs Deepeyed in gore is the green tartan's wave Shivering are the ranks of steel dire is the horseman's wheel Victorious in battlefield Scotland the brave Bold hearts and nodding plumes wave o'er their bloody tombs Deepeyed in gore is the green tartan's wave Shivering are the ranks of steel dire is the horseman's wheel Victorious in battlefield Scotland the brave Victorious in battlefield Scotland the brave Edited by Michelle, Dec 18 2009, 10:35 AM.

That's interesting. I think some of those might have been among the artefacts found on board a vaking ship when it was raised a while ago; they're on display in a museum in Norway. |

I'm going to be biased, too, as I've lived here for 13 years, but the UK is a very special country, and I wouldn't swap Chester for the world. What a shame it is ruined by having the worst democracy imaginable .

That's because no-one did . We elected the Labour Party with Tony Blair as its head in 1997. Who, after all, in their right mind, would have voted for Labour with GB as its head?

Probably ? Surely even he is unaware of his own unpopularity .Anyway, it's such a shame to waste a topic about the UK on Gordon Brown, especially as he won't be in power this time next year. What is your favourite British city? |

Now, we've got someone suggesting that the UK would be better off if London were to become independent: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21934564 To me, that idea seems like madness. The economic disparity they cite as justification won't suddenly disappear if London becomes independent. In fact, if this independent state of London became a tax haven, it could get even worse. And who would represent the new city-state at the UN? Boris Johnson??? (Actually, I'd like to see that )
