He Makes Things

Well ya see, Chris, back in 1997 Volvo was a distinguished and honorable automobile maker. Then, in 1998, they were bought by Ford, beginning a downward spiral into the manufacture of the cheap, breakable welding accidents everyone was by then accustomed to buying from Ford, but sold with the Volvo name taped on, billed as one of Ford's "luxury" car lines (you know, like Lincoln). Then, in 2010, Ford discovered that people hated the shitty cars they had been taping Volvo's name on, and had to get out from under the company before it did them in (what with being ass-broke and destitute already here in the States because people figured out long ago that Fords that said Ford on them were to be avoided like the plague, and were only being bought by extras from the set of Hee-Haw to replace last year's enormous ugly pickup truck, which had invariably broken. So, Ford had a Swedish car company to sell, and who should take up the offer but Chinese auto conglomerate Geely. This was generally regarded by Volvo enthusiasts as being a bad idea. But anyway, Volvo, constantly under the limits of manufacturers who demanded they inflate profit margins to levels that could only be achieved with the lowest possibly quality products, produced the latest generation S60 (that stands for Sedan 60, because back when the company was Swedish-owned people just got so gosh-darned confused that there were both sedans and estate cars with names like "850", so they threw the 850 body on a nice, bendable, cheap to manufacture Ford Focus chassis, and renamed it Coupe (C70), Sedan (S70), Versatile (V70, and yes really), or Cross-Country (XC70), depending on the body style, creating four different models to clear things up, presumably for Ford executives), and what better way to promote this new car than with a video game, released for free? Luckily, a Swedish game developer, SimBin, had already created a number of exceptionally realistic driving simulators for the PC and Xbox 360, aimed at recreating the European Touring Car racing experience. They agreed to create this Volvo: The Game as an advertising medium for the new S60. To hold on for dear life to what honor they could, they included classic Swedish touring car racing tracks and the venerable Volvo 240 and Volvo 850 (an estate) racing cars, which came out of nowhere and annihilated other puny non-viking automobiles in the 1980s and 90s throughout the European touring car world. And there you have it. Edited by FZE, Dec 22 2010, 10:50 PM.
