Its been an interesting time as of late in the world of TF2, after a quite spell made up almost entirely of nothingness and (and some would argue) pointless information things are starting to kick off again in that timed honored Valve tradition of 'Give them a little and they'll make a lot' (or words to that effect).

In the past few days we've received a cryptic weather themed blog post of mystery and wind:

TF2 Blog

Do you hear that? That ominous, otherworldly silence? That's what we in the game biz call the calm before a storm. And keep listening... do you hear that distant rumble? We call that thunder. It happens during a storm whenever it's not quiet.

All of these portents can only mean one thing: Something big is happening. The fact that everybody else on the team keeps telling me that it's only weather, and that weather can't talk to you, tells me they're all in on it. (And possibly not human? More on this later.)

Perhaps it's the upcoming Polycount Pack update making the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and the Australia-shaped hair on my back matte itself back down, since it means we'll be shipping the best of the amazing Polycount Contest entries. Be glad you're not one of us, forced to order that list of magnificent items into some kind of hierarchy. Maybe we'll just announce they've all won first place.

Or maybe it's the release of the Official TF2 Wiki that's made weather choose me as its emissary on Earth. Developed by the administrators of the unofficial TF2 wiki, it's a perfect place to find out everything you ever wanted to know about TF2, but were too afraid to type into Google. Head over there and see if you can help them out. If you're a useful enough contributor, the weather might talk to you too. It might even point out which of the people on your team aren't real humans. Then we could compare notes.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's something else entirely.

And then there was the discovery of the mysterious and cryptic GOLDEN WRENCH!:

And then there was the epic awe inspiring comic of Engineers and unearth (which the blog post may have been hinted at but we'll see).

Couple all that with the not so cryptic Engnieer Update teaser, it all lays way to a helluva lot of speculation, arguments and hidden link searching.

For example I speculate that that Australium stuff will be used to build the new buildings, rather than collecting metal from dropped weapons and ammo the Engi' collects it from killing people with his golden wrench.

Oh and that the life extending machine will work like a cross between the dispenser and the medi-gun, in that it will charge as people are healed by it and when activated will give a health boot to everyone in its area of effect and buff those at full health. The buff and heal level will increase and the building is upgraded for example:

At Level 1 it will instant heal 75hp and buff by 50%
At Level 2 it will instant heal 100hp and buff by 75%
And At Level 3 it will instant heal 125hp and buff by 100%

By having a max buff level that's 50% lower than the medi-gun it will prevent it from being completely tossed in favor for a mass Engie' 'Undeath Machine', The trade offs will be that it heals at a lower rate than the conventional dispenser (possibly starting at 5hp per sec' and going up as such), it can only be repaired by the Golden Wrench and doesn't produce metal or ammo/produces them at lower yield (much like the health rate).

But thats just what I think.

Speculate away!

I don't think that your life-extender will be implemented. Valve previously said that that other dispenser-thingy was scrapped because it didn't provide the support and usefulness the normal dispenser did. Your life-extender is only mildly supportive and hardly useful.

On the other hand, I believe that if this Golden Wrench is real, it might be used for further upgrades instead at cost of more fallen, "Australiuminated" soldier material than the normal wrench.
Or one thing engies have complained about before is that their buildings doesn't build/upgrade fast enough in relation to their building/upgrading speed, Australium and the Golden wrench could possibly increase the speed of these things.
But this is also unlikely because the engie would, if trying to erect a building, have to leave said building in order to hunt for material. Furtherly, this would underpower the engie because we'd have a bunch of idiots running out in the field trying to wail heavies to death...

I'm out of ideas...

Like I say its speculative, though I reckon on that there will be some kind of 'Not Dieing Machine' implemented some how.

Even if its just a super dispenser.

The son of Colonel Cubbage?!
According to code found in the game, the Golden Wrench will be numbered and may be destroyed by some means. That, plus the fact that it's identical to the regular wrench and has no new uses, leads me to believe it's something akin to Gentle manne's service medal and not a real new unlockable. I was thinking you might have to craft it in a specific way - and may accidentally destroy it -, but considering the Internet would immediately have thorough descriptions of how to do it, I doubt it.

Obviously you're more intrigued by gameplay than story, which is normal, but I'm personally looking at the little tidbits of story info we've been given, because the whole Mann story is so fun. Back in the Hallowe'en update, the family photo had not only all the known characters, but also an individual dressed in green, and Zepheniah's will hinted at someone else who's sworn to secrecy over something. And, if you look at the last page of the comic, you see a third person got the life-extending machine as well...
I always thought GRN would appear sometime, so maybe this is it.

All this talk of green makes me pine for the days of TFC and protecting the civilian from three other teams.

What about the new gun? It didn't really give me the impression of a shotgun so I kinda think it could be some sort of rifle... with ricocheting bullets like the rail-gun?

It's a shotgun. Rifles are not pump-action.
