And with a single mouse click, a weapon was born of vertices.

NOW!

We must choose its colors and materials!

Will it be made of advanced polycarbonates, or solid metal? Gunmetal grey? OD Green? Camouflage paint job? ICE CREAM PAINT JOB?!

Narrow it down, Union. Throw out any ideas or combinations you might have, and I'll mock them up on the model. The most popular will be made into the final skin, by none other than...

SOMEONE ELSE!

That's right, we're getting a quality skinner on this bitch.

Well, I thought so as well but I'm not really sure that there's much for that. I was planning on a straight-sided weapon, very black box, you know? A solid piece of gun without the working parts out in the open. Once the bolts and grooves and such are textured on it won't look nearly so plain, I would hope.

I've since considerably optimized the thing, and could fit on more details if need be, but I'm curious as to what details I could add that wouldn't be there just for the sake of adding polygons. I tend to model with a very functional mindset, as in I model what I know has to be there for a gun to work, but this usually means I leave out the details that make things look realistic.

In a lot of modern bullpup assault rifles, I see this trend of unnecessary detail, like they have to make it look like a piece of art before people will buy it.

Take the F2000.

Jaysis that's a gun in there somewhere. As long as it works, that's fine, but what the hell are these lines for? How will they help the soldier in combat? Is the enemy going to surrender when they see that you are, beyond a doubt, armed with a space gun from Mars?

Then you've got the AUG, the granddaddy of bullpup rifles.

Is this necessary? Is it supposed to look like something from the Louvre?

Posted Image

Couldn't those be straight, parallel lines, easier and cheaper to manufacture?

Why yes, they could, and Steyr even thought so too.

And then you've got the FAMAS.

Jesus shat, what the fuck am I looking at?

Is the soldier supposed to carry it by that? The only reason it's there is to accommodate your equally ridiculous charging handle, and now your sights are eight feet above your barrel.

So, I'm not disagreeing with you, it does look very straight and blocky for a gun, but this is why my guns almost always turn out straight and blocky. I can't think of any more detail to put in there because I can't think of what it would do, and I really wish that weren't the case because it usually means my guns look like cartoon weapons or something.

The weapon is sexy, although I don't really have any ideas about how the texture should look...

Something what I quickly whipped up, excuse the crudity of it as I'm not gun expert and I failed graphic design:
