Since there has already been discussions on the benefits and not so benefits of books being turned into films, I thought it would be a good idea to make a post especially for it.

Some of the most known (and recent) books to film, films are:

The Lord of the Rings trilogy
The Harry Potter Series
Princess Diaries
Roald Dahl books - e.g. The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda
The Chronicles of Narnia
Alice in Wonderland
The Golden Compass series...I'm sorry, I don't know the books names. :( Northern Lights? The Amber Spyglass? And...?

And there is many many more...Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants being one that I LOVE, both book and extremely changed films <_< . :-p

So, discuss!

I love the Happy Potter films the best! They're not exactly like the books, because they obviously have to cut bits out cause the books are so long.. but I think they're great.
I also like Princess Diaries, Bridget Jones' Diary and The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Golden Compass Series is 'His Dark Materials'

The Book Titles are: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

One of my favourite book to films is Memoirs of a Geisha. The shooting of it is absolutely beautiful - it's just stunning to watch. Storyline-wise, they've changed things, they always do. But seriously, it's beautiful.

I adore the book for its magnificant detail.

That's the one! ^^^ :p

I love Princess Diaries, I haven't actually read the books (despite owning 3 of them) but think the films are really good. :)

I've never been inclined to watch/read Memoirs of a Geisha, but it does sound interesting.

I guess detail is the one thing you're bound to lose in a film - they can only show it, not explain it after all. They can show (for example) a nice looking wardrobe, but in a book - they can call it all sorts of magnificent adjectives.

would anyone else count the marvel/dc films as books to films??

I suppose they could be considered as such...even the cartoon to film element of many films that exist.

For example, I loved the Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe cartoon, but disliked the fact they turned it into a real life film.

Hi!
Im interested in your opinions as whether the fact you read the book before seeing the film effects your judgement on the film.
For example, I read Stephen King's The Shining a long time before seeing the film, and was then disappointed with the film, since the ending is completely different and there were a lot of little changes from the book.

Anyone agree?

I think I would tend to agree!

I read the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (one of my favourite books) before the film, in fact I read all 4 in the series (maybe 3) and then saw the film - and it annoyed me because not only did it change it from the first book, it also stole parts of books 2 and 3, which ruined the chances of there being 4 films.

On the other hand, with Harry Potter I watched the first film before even liking Harry Potter, so that meant I saw the characters as the people in the film (Richard Harris will always be Dumbledore for me). But then reading the other books meant I saw what wasn't included in the other films...so yeah, I think it can really!

The same with The Girl with the Pearl Earring really, that too wasn't as good as the book.

Watching a film first, I think you're less likely to be disappointed with the book!

Yep, watching the film first, you cant be as disappointed with the book, since you sort of know what's gonna happen. I haven't seen that many films that made me want to read the book tho. The only one I can think of at the moment is the Exorcist (And no, I don't just watch and read horror films / books lol)
