Wow, this guy is going to help our schools. In addition to his ideas about forced child labor earlier, he is now considering Michael Bennet for Secretary of Education. People who live in Denver can tell you: That's the worst choice possible. For those who don't know, he's the superintendent of the Denver Public Schools (our school district). We know from first hand experience: this man is a fucking retard. Things have changed for the worst since he took over. Here are some things he's done: 1. Instituted mandatory "training sessions" for our teachers. They have gigantic conferences about how better to teach us, and then they have to try to implement some of the ideas. This results in teachers being forced to teach in ways they disagree with, and provides roadblocks to education. It's just more bureaucracy. 2. Took all of the good food out of our vending machines. We get baked chips, diet sodas, and sugar free cookies. He thinks that the food is the reason that everyone is fat. Then he proceeds to cut back on gym class. 3. He's destroying electives. When my brother went to my school not five years ago, our school had classes like wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, home ec, and all sorts of other classes. Now we've got bullshit electives. Art, band, choir, drama, gym, and weightlifting (which they fucked up, by the way). Since I've been there, they've taken away guitar and a lot of other classes. 4. We've had four different class schedules since I've been at South. My freshman year, we started class at three different times depending upon what day it was. Mondays started at 8:15, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:10, and Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:25. And when our test scores invariably fall every year, Bennet thinks the solution is a different schedule. 5. They're going to start closing campuses at lunch in the next few years. No leaving the school. You can eat cafeteria food or you can bring your own. He tried to do it last year, but everyone just blew off the rule and they backed off. 6. They're discussing uniforms as a way to combat gang violence. Ask anyone who goes to a DPS school from this forum. Luis, Cody, Allison... Doesn't matter. Everyone will tell you what a horrible pick Bennet would be. |

Ugh, sounds terrible. The public school system in Miami-Dade/Broward was pretty fucked up, with similar problems like the ones you had with yours, at least when I was in school. Obama hasn't chosen that guy yet though, hopefully he won't. |

Oh, and at least he didn't hire anyone from Florida, we've got the shittiest school system/schedule in the country imo. |

Yeah our schools suck... I think we're one of the lowest in the country when it comes to SAT scores and students who graduate high school |

The real solution would be to abolish the Department of Education, but the bureaucrats will never give up their power and cushy jobs. |

if you got rid of the department of edu. youd have to make every school private and possibly use a voucher system |

No. Before the Department of Education existed, school was funded on a state and local level. We could easily revert back to that system. Our education quality has plummeted since the federal government got involved. And yes, we SHOULD completely privatize the system with no vouchers. With minimal government regulations prices would be affordable to almost everyone. Let scholarships and private charities handle the rest. As long as there is demand, supply will materialize. Everyone would get an education if the system were privatized and it would work a hell of a lot better. |

Seriously... it just seems so obvious... I had to write a paper on it and it just makes no fucking sense why drugs are illegal... no fucking logic in them being illegal... and you don't even have to consider the individual rights all people should all have to figure that out. |

Gangs thrive on illegal markets. Remove the illegal markets and you make gangs obsolete. The only reason they really "fight for turf" is the right to sell drugs in certain areas. The best argument against the illegality of drugs is the prohibition of alcohol in the '30's. Once alcohol became illegal, criminals associated with the illegal distribution of the product skyrocketed. Then after it was legalized again, it disappeared. |

It's very frustrating to me... these things seem so blatantly obvious... how fucking ignorant do you have to be not to know this... |
