i think it's annoying and a big poser genre. stereotypes ftw!!11 also, i hate the direction it went it. i liked metal bands like Kyuss in the late 80s, and i was hoping it would come out like that. instead, metal ended up being a bunch of long-haired losers barking into a microphone swinging long hair around, and having a constant double kicker going, all while winging about blood and religion. it's retarded. i hate lots of music, but emo and metal make me the most angry...closely followed my rock, punk, rap, and almost everything else. |

i love the way metal turned out to be, aside from the fact that its got a huge amount of me-tooers anyway, as someone who played in bands for a long time i pretty much came to the conclusion that most musicians are infact posers, and so are many music lovers. i dont agree with being a fan, and most musicians are in it to be seen as popular or cool, or they imitate. dont forget theyre self righteous and extremely jealous. this is why i largely avoid the scene and rarely get into playing in bands anymore. |

not the grunge seen...they were anything but posers. they lived what they sang about and were extremely talented on top of that. the only music i listen to is grunge, rage against the machine, and tool. they are REAL, which is rare. |

Ah, so then to you a redneck is the culmination of every negative stereotype about Southern Americans. Sorry, but it isn't that simple. The essence of redneck living is simplicity and a desire for all people to live in a manner they see fit. It has many, many parellels to libertarianism. Some of the greatest songwriters of all time are self-identified rednecks, like Ronnie Van Zant and Greg Allman. Jeff Foxworthy worked as a mainframe computer maintenance tech at IBM before becoming a comedy icon. Ron White is a Vietnam veteran and an author, actor and, comedian. Many negative stereotypes about Southern Americans (illiteracy, inbreeding) were a result of class elitism by Northerners between the Civil War and World War I. The Southern economy was crippled and the Northnern economy was booming, so Southerners were recognized as the "peons". They were the poor people. Rich people felt better about living in luxury after they had destroyed the Southern economy in the Civil War when they began to think about Southerners as lesser beings. And yes, poverty in the South was a direct result of the federal government becoming too power hungry. They didn't want to free black people, they wanted to take away the South's power and influence. And they succeeded. But their conscience didn't take such a hit when they thought of Southerners as dogs as opposed to people. I am a redneck. My roots go back to Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Bakersfield, California. I identify with the term because I prefer a setting where people are left to their own devices. Small towns are preferable to big cities any day of the week. The music, the literature, the food, and the attitude of the South is amazing. Go read William Faulkner, Truman Capote, Harper Lee, Mark Twain, and Flannery O'Connor and tell me something about Southern writing. Go listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and CCR (I know they're not from the South, but their style is as Southern as it gets) and tell me something about Southern intelligence. Ron Paul and Thomas Jefferson are from the South, and their libertarian ideals fit perfectly with what living in the South is all about. |

I think we are on a different page here. You will find no argument from me when it comes to the South. The Mises Institute is in the South. Most of the values that I hold are prominent in the South. And I do not by any means consider southerners to be rednecks. I am from Wisconsin, very much north. And this area is about 85% rednecks. Not southerners, rednecks. My neighbors one house away, own about 14 rusted out vehicles. They drive their snowmobiles to class. My neighbor would chew in class, and spit it in his mountain dew bottle. He killed racoons with a baseball bat and kept it in his front seat just in case. He has a gun rack in his truck which is jacked up about 36 inches. He drinks beer for breakfast. He reads at a 3rd grade level, and knows that Bush is good and liberal hippies are the devil. He listens to country and knows every song by heart. This is what my area is like. THIS is a redneck. I don't consider it geographical by any means. I completely agree with you on the South, perhaps just not the definition of rednecks. |

really?? i thought you would appreciate their lyrics for the most part. i mean economically they arent good, but their foreign policy and anti-government lyrics make me happy. i saw them last summer, and they started a riot. it's good stuff. i dont agree with a lot, but at the same time, they have some excellent points. and yea, tool is my favorite. mostly because of their dummer, their time signatures, and odd structure of songs. |

well, if someone advocates government in the economy 9/10 im not having it. The only thing I can justify is police, military and such. Even then I feel like a hypocrite. Really what we need is anarcho capitalism. but itll never happen, because people dont hear about it from the idiot box. i actually get frustrated and very offended by socialism. Any form of it, including that bullshit that Noam Chomsky says is anarchy.
