What makes a great RPG? It has to have a gripping and emotional story, it has to have epic music that you sometimes stop playing just to hear it for a while, it has to have characters that you can relate to and agree with, the graphics has to be ahead of it's time and never cease to amaze.

Lost Odyssey has all of those, and unfortunately, a little more.

Gameplay--

Timing ring adds that little touch to the static RPG fare.

Other than the timing ring, the turn-based RPG stuff is practically untouched. You cast spells, you use items, you attack, use skills, etc.
This game is from Final Fantasy creators, and they're not afraid to show it apparently, as you can find this type of stuff in any final fantasy game.

Story--

The cutscenes will often cut into pieces, letting you see all of the characters emotions

The story is probably going to be the main reason you play this game and stay with it. The game opens up with a soldier named Kaim kickin' ass during war when a meteor strikes killing everyone except him (He was made immortal by a sorcerer named Gongora, who also took his memories). So the story goes on as Kaim tries to get his memories back and kill the one responsible for taking them away, making him forget about everyone he loves.

If you're a softy at heart, you will enjoy the strings this game pulls emotionally, having a tear jerking moment ruined by Jansen (Who is actually funny), never gets old, and works perfectly.

Graphics--

Facial expressions are clear and artistically mastered.

Lets face it, some people play games just for graphics, and those people will not be disappointed here. Everything is done with 100% effort at heart, the environments, the monsters, the characters, is all done with no pixel out of place.

The unique ways some buildings and ships are made will make you appreciate the graphics that much more.

Music--

Nobuo Uematsu is a genius

I saved the best for last, the music is the best music I've heard from a game in 9 years. Uematsu knows how to make music, and isn't afraid to strut his stuff. To give you a taste:

There are many more tracks that will entrance you and immerse you.

Overall: If it weren't for the average gameplay and often pointless, dumb objectives and hindrances you have to overcome during the game, this game would be perfect, but I guess Lost Odyssey will just have to settle for masterpiece.

Gameplay - 7.5, standard, nothing you haven't seen before
Story - 9.5, one of the best parts of the game
Graphics - 9.0, looks great, but has noticeable frame-rate drops
Music- 9.5, sounds great, unforgettable, however, more than one tune for the random encounter battles would've been nice

Overall: 8.5/10

I've heard lots of good things about this, but I only have a PS3, so i have not had a chance to play it :(. It alone is enough to make me want a 360, though. Glad to hear even more love for this game.

I love certain JRPGs, such as Eternal Sonata, which is probably the best JRPG I've played this generation.
