DISCLAIMER!

This thread will not discuss the details of how said software was obtained. Thank you. :$

I've been playing with this for about 2 hours now. I've got Japanese level 1 loaded up and it's a very very good teaching tool. Considering how much it costs at retail, it damn well better be and believe me, it is. The system is set up in such a way that you must use the same context clues and skills that you developed when learning your original native language to learn a new one.

You're given several pictures along with the hiragana, katakana or kanji (or romanji if you prefer) and you must match up the right phrases and sentences with the pictures. There are 3 levels of each language there are 3 or 4 units in each level. within each unit there are several core lessons that teach you vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, listening and comprehension.

If I go through a couple hours of this a day, it's possible for me to learn Japanese in about a month or so...

"If I go through a couple hours of this a day, it's possible for me to learn Japanese in about a month or so..."

No it isn't. You may become adept, but you will not attain fluency in a matter of months. Luis and I have been learning Japanese for four years and neither of us are fluent. Brad has also been learning for quite some time, and he is not fluent either.

Jacob, or Lavadisk as you may know him, spoke better Japanese than I did in August. He has been living in Japan since, and even he is not completely fluent.

Our Japanese teacher lived in Japan and taugh English for years, and he is not completely fluent. He speaks nearly a dozen languages, and even he has to stop and analyze what people are saying to him from time to time.

I don't think you know how hard it is to truly learn a language. I have a far greater capacity for learning a language than most people, and I still have problems. I can easily carry on a conversation in Japanese, and you may get to that level, but there is no way that you're going to learn the entirety of the language in a matter of months.

Fluency takes years to acquire. Someone who is "fluent" generally has almost the entire major vocabulary under their belt as well as most of the grammar. I could easily communicate in Japanese right now if I wanted to but it would take some time and the person listening would think me to be a grade-school student.

And the best way to learn a language is through spoken practice with another person. If you don't do that, you won't ever "learn" the language. You will just "know" it. Most communication comes in the form of accentuation and tone, not the actual words themselves. And Japanese is a *very* tonal/context sensitive language.

I should rephrase. I will have absorbed all the information from the software that I could get and could speak it, albeit with some degree of difficulty.

what jason said.

And yeah. You probably could. But from my experience its a lot better to learn the structure and written first and then SLOWLY progress in vocabulary and spoken.

Everybody does it the other way and it confuses them.

It's impossible to know every word in any language, that's what dictionaries are for, so we can look up words we don't know.

You don't have to have a full capacity of Japanese to live in Japan or carry out a conversation, in fact, I'm only in Japanese 1 and I can introduce myself and order at restaurants and stuff.

My Japanese teacher brought in Japanese exchange students who were in college and wanted us to show them how much Japanese we could speak, and at the end of all of this they said that not even college kids who were taking Japanese could speak that much.

I hope you have nothing but the best of successes learning Japanese with that software, Japanese is a fun language to speak.

seems that way but it also seems that everyone here but me had the opportunity to study it in a formal environment as well. We only had spanish as an option for a second language in high school. I went to a technical college so there was not much by the way of language study there either.

By the looks of it, yes, everybody is learning Japanese.

Even me. This is clearly a conspiracy started by the Illuminati to establish a worldwide language for the New World Order, with The Board and it users as its evil pawn :O !
