anyone here use it? im thinkin about installing it on my other pc, because I currently have opensuse on it and its just not my thing. i love the kde environment, but the way they do it started to get on my nerves. kde4 is largely unusable anyway. the good thing about linux mint is that all the media stuff comes installed right out of the box. |

Linux Mint is Ubuntu with all the multimedia stuff you need, plus some better admin tools. The only reason I don't use it is because the release cycle is slower than Ubuntu's. |

On a somewhat unrelated note, do any of you know a website that has tutorials and basic information on how to use linux/unix os's? I have an A+ certification textbook that I occasionally look at, but it doesn't expound on operating basic linux. I have ubuntu 3.something on a disc somewhere, but never got around to using it because I'm too lazy to learn how to use it. I'm pretty good with windows, but it's too limiting, especially XP. 2000 is good, but compatibility is out the window. I imagine Ubuntu is way worse as far as compatability goes, but it's so adaptable that with a bit of time I hear it has the potential to out-preform windows in speed, ease of use, security, and good looks.

I can tell you pretty much anything you need to know about Ubuntu. The best way to install is Wubi: http://wubi-installer.org/ Read the FAQs there and all the rest. Then read this: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/desktopedition If you have any questions, check here: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Intrepid And then feel free to ask here. I know just about anything you'd want to know about Ubuntu. |

Wow.. cool. Thanks. I guess I'll go and check out those sites, and then download it. I'm on dial-up, so... We'll see how that one goes. Edit: Holy crap!!! 5 gbs! I'm gonna have to go to my cousins house to get that one, he has DSL, close to 1mb/s download rate... Where as I get 2-3 kb/s. Guess I'll have to put it on hold for now. Thanks for the support tho, I suppose I'll use the time to read up on linux and ubuntu in particular. Edited by stingerxxx, Thursday Nov 20 2008, 12:42 AM.

Dial-up? Be sure to read EVERYTHING you can find about dial-up in Ubuntu. I don't imagine it's hard, but I have no experience there. In addition to the above sources, check here: http://ubuntuforums.org/ The Absolute Beginner Talk section was a life-saver when I was starting out. |

Ah. Only 700MB, that'll take a few full nights. Problem is it kicks me off repeatedly at random times, so I still can't do it now. I'll read everything I can about it before I put it on, and I appreciate the help you're giving me. Halfway through the faq already.

Yeah, my cousin. I have no idea where you live or how much you know about central Cali, but I live in squaw valley an hour outside of fresno. Satellite and dsl connections are impossible here, but my cousin lives in fresno and has a 700 kb/s connection. I'll be able to go down there in a few weeks and will download it then. Until then, I have alot of reading and question asking to do. |

Ah, cool. Would it surprise you to know that I'm 16 years old? I've lived in squaw valley my entire life and am planning on a career in computers. I specialize in hardware (I built the computer I'm on right now) and am learning a bit about software. Coding really isn't something I've ever done, so I plan on taking a few courses on that in conjection with A+ and A++ certification classes. I've had experience with HTML and and a smattering of C++, but have little knowledge in that area. Back to the topic, I've been interested in linux based OS's mostly because of their modability, and one of the reasons I want to use it on my comp is to "pick it apart", so to speak. So, when the time comes, I may be asking for help in the basics, like changing graphical interfaces, just starting with color, size etc. and moving on to complete graphical overhauls and then function. I've seen that many people on this board have experience in using various OS's and was hoping someone has experience in modding to the level I was planning on doing. |

This is going to take a long time to load.... As I said, 2-3 kb/s download rate. To sum it up, I'm looking for a secure, stable OS with extremely diverse user capabilities, abilities that windows wouldn't even dream about having. Linux is exactly the thing for user capabilities, open-source code ensures that. I've heard that a properly designed code is very stable. However it's security I'm worried about. Compatability is also a big issue, as I am a big gamer, and there are certain utilities that I use (Fresh Devices makes a few good ones, SiSandra and certain computer augmentation utilities such as CPUCool, Cacheman, NvMixer etc.) I also want a OS that can look like my case- red and black, maybe have some dark blue in there. I know the coloring is possible, I believe it's just hex coding, which is easy to change. However, attaining that sleek, "cool" look is not as easy, as pictures have to be designed and modded to size to fit together, and my experience with photoshop is minimal, and I'd have to rely on pre-created packages to complete a look. Note: I've watched the first 40 seconds or so (all that's loaded by now) and it looks like something that I'd like. No clutter, accessible icons linking to selected programs that are hidden away at the bottom, fancy music, full 3d video desktop. Reminiscent of Vista, which is full of bugs and costs more than a house. However, I'm sure that since this is Linux (presumably ubuntu 8.10) the bugs are worked out. Is this particular video a user-created OS or is it available to the public for download? (I imagine if so it's a theme, not the entire OS.) |

Ubuntu is prime for anything except gaming. Keep Windows around for that. But Ubuntu is faster, more stable, more secure, and fully customizable. |

yeah it supports it, you will have to install it though. anyway, i just got done using linux mint and I really like it. the biggest problem I have with gnome is the "start button" thing, when the menu comes up its very bleh. linux mint has it set up very vista like (search box there etc) which I think is good. its a lot more customizable and comes with a lot of the media stuff built in. Eventually I might make the switch, but for now im gonna install it on my other pc to feel it out. |

Okay, so after a recent malware surge on the family PC running Windows XP Home SP3 right after one of the neighboring kids needs to print out some school documents, I decided to look into Linux again, at least for the LiveCD portion and perhaps talking my parents into installing an OS on that thing that doesn't suffer from those goddamn malware infections, not to mention not running so goddamn slow (an Athlon XP 1800+, 512 MB of single-channel DDR-266, and a 5,400 RPM hard drive don't exactly make up a fast PC). All they really do is Web browsing (with some Flash games for my little brother), e-mail, and perhaps Office-related tasks. Linux has all of that in spades, and all for FREE. I at least used an Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid CD to back up some family photos to my PC's hard drive for the eventual reformat (my attempts to repair the XP installation just fucked it up harder with explorer.exe not loading and thus denying any users the Start Menu and desktop icons, and Internet Exploiter now also doesn't work when launched from the Task Manager), and noted how easily it can browse through Windows partitions. Certainly a cakewalk compared to some other Linux distros I've used before, though it seems that it's more because of GNOME (I couldn't access the drive nearly as easily with KDE 4.0 on Kubuntu or Xfce on Xubuntu, all 8.10 Intrepid-based, of course). I decided to check on the X-Fi driver situation-something that's been a problem for a long while, and the primary reason I hadn't put Linux on my gaming PC before. (I'm not just going to let my Auzentech X-Fi Prelude sit idle!) Luckily, Creative finally released some driver source code a few weeks back. "Hell, it's about time." Even better, unlike the Windows drivers that seem to draw a distinction between the Auzentech-branded Prelude and all the other Creative-branded X-Fi cards despite using the same damn driver codebase, I just punched in a couple of terminal commands and alas, I had sound-no editing needed! (Ironically, X-Fi Titanium owners reported the need to change a value in order to have the drivers installed-the exact worry I had with my Prelude!) I also came to grips with this whole package system that people use to install Linux components and apps, and let me tell you-it kicks ass. Downloading and installing stuff is a cinch when you know how to use it (and it's not hard when you have the GUI-based package manager and an Internet full of terminal lines to use!). Also, one of my fears was that bash was going to jack up my learning curve, since I expected to use it a lot and type in long lines of cryptic arguments just to get shit done. Surprisingly enough, the terminal commands that I did have to use were easy to comprehend and not all that long! It wasn't all THAT different from DOS, which I can still use to some extent. (I still remember having to fiddle with address, IRQ, and DMA settings just to get the damn sound card to work in a game...AND YOU HAD TO DO IT FOR EACH GAME!) Finally, CrossOver-the commercial, polished-up version of WINE that's much simpler to use, and luckily went free one day because of some Lame Duck Challenge. It's pretty seamless with the desktop environment, much unlike, say, a virtual machine. Ironically, it even seems to run Sacrifice better than Windows Vista x64 does, though I can't use EAX for obvious reasons. (I wonder when something like ALchemy will be implemented into WINE-that is, a DirectSound-to-whatever-API-is-popular-with-Linux-distros wrapper.) However, a lot of my programs will still need a bit of fiddling to run. Still, much better than having to reboot into Vista just to run a Windows app. Oh, and best of all, even with Compiz Fusion running, Ubuntu is a HELL of a lot more responsive than Vista ever was. It boots up much faster, runs more responsively, and also shuts down much faster as well. All in all, I'm almost to the point of saying "Does someone need Windows Vista Ultimate x64? I sure as hell don't!" I'm not quite there yet, though-there's still too many games and whatnot that only work right under Windows. Still, for everything else, it seems that there's no real point to Windows anymore. |

Yeah, that's the same attitude that most people who try Ubuntu have. People using Vista or OSX don't realize how shitty their OS really is until they use one that is so much better. I wish Crossover and WINE ran more games though. All of the Steam games will run now, so at least they're making progress. |

All right, my venture into Ubuntu has been smooth sailing thus far...except for one thing. Trying to get a Windows Mobile device to sync is a pain in the ass. I followed the directions as best as I could (almost to-the-letter, but I had to get the synce-dccm package from a Web site since apt-get couldn't find it), but I can't get the damn thing to work. Maybe if I fiddled around a bit more with it, I might get something working... You said that you have a Motorola Q, which is also a Windows Mobile device (albeit Smartphone/Standard rather than Pocket PC/Classic). Do you sync it with Ubuntu/Evolution, and if so, how do you do it? |
