Give this a read:
Just 2% of voters who supported Barack Obama on Election Day obtained perfect or near-perfect scores on a post election test which gauged their knowledge of statements and scandals associated with the presidential tickets during the campaign, a new Zogby International telephone poll shows.

Only 54% of Obama voters were able to answer at least half or more of the questions correctly.

The 12-question, multiple-choice survey found questions regarding statements linked to Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his vice-presidential running-mate Sarah Palin were far more likely to be answered correctly by Obama voters than questions about statements associated with Obama and Vice-President–Elect Joe Biden. The telephone survey of 512 Obama voters nationwide was conducted
Ninety-four percent of Obama voters correctly identified Palin as the candidate with a pregnant teenage daughter, 86% correctly identified Palin as the candidate associated with a $150,000 wardrobe purchased by her political party, and 81% chose McCain as the candidate who was unable to identify the number of houses he owned. When asked which candidate said they could "see Russia from their house," 87% chose Palin, although the quote actually is attributed to Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey during her portrayal of Palin during the campaign.

83% failed to correctly answer that Obama had won his first election by getting all of his opponents removed from the ballot, and 88% did not correctly associate Obama with his statement that his energy policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry. Most (56%) were also not able to correctly answer that Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of Obama voters did not correctly identify Biden as the candidate who had to quit a previous campaign for President because he was found to have plagiarized a speech, and nearly half (47%) did not know that Biden was the one who predicted Obama would be tested by a generated international crisis during his first six months as President.

In addition to questions regarding statements and scandals associated with the campaigns, the 12-question, multiple-choice survey also included a question asking which political party controlled both houses of Congress leading up to the election -- 57% of Obama voters were unable to correctly answer that Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate.

And this is Zogby; one of the largest and most credible polling firms.

This just goes to show you how much rhetoric and smiles can get you in politics. Man, if only McCain ran a campaign with less substance...

Anybody will go for a guy who has a nice smile and knows how to appeal to the "common good". Overall, I'd say Canada is looking pretty attractive right now... America is the country of freedom because we have the freedom to not think for ourselves, we have T.V. and the media for that.... Easy turns out to be hard, but no one really gives half a shit. Or a quarter.

Well first, being stupid and uninformed are two different things. But anyways, of course many Obama supporters have almost no knowledge of what's going on, most voters don't regardless of who they support. I'm sure you can find similar statistics for every candidate for not only this election but previous ones.

I can understand the Palin Russia quote. Even CNN was attributing that to her. Honestly though, most of the questions read like they were lifted right of out of the rhetoric section of both parties play books. I think people not paying attention to rhetoric is a good thing.

This is why you should have to answer a test before voting so votes for the guy with the pretty face and quality orations aren't counted and he isn't elected.

the problem with the test is that the government would ask the questions, and could mess with certain people of certain persuasions. Questions about social justice might come into play, when I dont believe in social justice it might be considered wrong. I have a feeling it would quickly turn into a moral quiz.

I think people should have to pass a literacy exam, as well as math. If youre stupid and uneducated then you will make uneducated votes. This is coming from someone who admits to sucking at math. But I think they should have at least basic algebra questions on there, just to show that you arent an idiot.

I'm black and I know a lot of black friends and family members who support(I say support cuz we are canadians and can't vote, haha) Obama mostly cuz he's black.... Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same with many american black people.

Very stupid if you ask me. I mean yeah is a great man and wants the best for his country... but it's the same for McCain, ya know. *sighs* Need more reasons than that. Seriously.

Same thing can be said about McCain and the fact that he's white and/or religious.

McCain was the least religious of the bunch, including VP's

most people who voted mccain didnt vote for him because hes white. If obama was less obama like and closer to what I believe in, I would have voted for him instead. But I didnt. Im white, and voted against him because of his economic policies.

Obama and McCain are the same religion.

No, the sheep factor for McCain was his POW experience and his status as a cancer survivor. People naturally sympathize with things like that. But obviously, Obama's sheep factor was a hell of a lot larger.

But the biggest factor in this topic is the fact that Obama's supporters were that uninformed. Most voters are uninformed and the vast majority of people supporting any candidate are idiots, but Obama seems to have the highest percentage of idiots of all time. That's especially odd, since this election was closer than some in the past (Nixon and Reagan's wins).

Lmao.... this reminds me of the literacy tests during the Jim Crow laws. For those who don't know, these laws were in effect from the 1870's to the mid 1900's. The literacy tests for blacks to vote were harder than the finals for an AA in english at your standard community college. Whites had to take this test too, but their questions were like:

Ta fex jumped ta fence. Fix the spelling errors in this sentence.

However, back to my point. These tests were discontinued due to the fact that they were unconstitutional and unfair. As to taking a test when you go in to vote, for starters that's highly undemocratic. That reason alone will stop it. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, and if it were practical I could be in support of it. However, it's both illegal and unpractical. Sadly...

Unfortunately, this couldn't be closer to the truth, as your poll showed. I can guarantee that the majority of fresh-out-of-high school voters went for Obama, only the evangelical christian and well-informed voted for McCain. I do not support Obama. I believe that he has the potential to dig a very deep hole and throw this country into it. However, I also believe that he has the potential to lead a good four years, and probably eight if he does. As it is he is a unexperienced major political leader, and some of his proposed policies have subtle flaws that could be potentially disastrous. However, from what I have seen he has an awesome set of advisers, and Obama seems to be a man who is great at listening. He is an awesome public speaker, and he is well-informed. Both of these things walk hand in hand with being a good listener, and a good president can follow the lead of his more experienced subordinates. Obama has the air of someone who has a tempered attitude, and hopefully he will be considerate of those who give him advice. As our president, I will follow him. I may not support him as it is due to some of his views, but views notwithstanding he is our president. That in itself deserves respect.
Those who follow him may be self-absorbed dumbasses, but they do not define where this country is going anymore. Democracy only works once every four years. The rest of the time we are a republic, and Obama is the leader. It doesn't matter why or how he came to be, all that matters is that he is. And as such, it is up to the government now. We can talk and debate all we want, it doesn't ever help.

how is it unconstitutional? Show me pricesly where it says you cant have literacy and math tests.
I dont care about democracy. Infact, im glad we arent a democracy. I would never EVER want to live in a democratic nation. If people are going to vote, they have to be smart. If you arent smart, you dont vote. I want a government thats very static and merely defends the rights of individuals and then stays out of peoples lives.

How exactly is the government to be trusted if they can cherry pick who can vote?

Idiots have a right to vote too. That's the essence of a Republic. If someone wanted to vote for Nader because his name rhymes with Vader, he has every right to do so. I'm going to call him an idiot, but I'm not going to stop him.

Even the most libertarian philosophers believe that everyone should have a voice in government. The answer to bad government is not to limit who votes, but to limit the power of the people they're voting for.

That's very true. Regardless of whether Obama had your support or not during the election process, instead of trying to point out any flaws, we should hope he does a good job. It doesn't matter how much we argue here, especially when the man hasn't become president yet. Hopefully he will surprise his critics and confirm his supporters' faith in him, for everyone's sake.

No. What qualifies one to vote is entirely subjective. By instituting a test you're just being an elitist prick. Every person of voting age needs to have a voice in the government.

A person can be as dumb as a rock. It doesn't matter. No matter how dumb you are, you should be able to decide what's best for you and your family provided you're of voting age.

Even educated people vote for candidates for stupid reasons.
