www.xbmc.org free, opensource, python and xml script driven media center application. It was originally developed for the xbox back in 2004 (which I'm running btw) and they've since ported it to Linux, OSX Tiger and Leopard as well as Windows XP and Vista. Super customizable. Easy to use. Check it out. Later, Dave |

Running it on one of my Xboxes as we speak. Totally awesome, and I even made it the dashboard (first interface to be run upon boot)! I can rip music with ease to the internal HDD with more flexibility than the MS stock dashboard, play DVDs upscaled to 720p, watch YouTube videos (streaming or saved to HDD), and stream content from my main PC with its 465 GB of storage for when the 8 GB of the Xbox just isn't enough, among other things. The Windows variant tends to hog my CPU for some reason, though. I don't quite like programs chewing through processor cycles when they're idle and not really doing anything. Perhaps that's because it was designed for the non-multitasking environment of the Xbox initially. The other potential issue is that the skins I tend to prefer are more suited to an Xbox gamepad than KB+M, especially MC360. Perhaps if I could get my X360 wireless pad working with it... |

now that's an idea! I'm gonna try it out. I was considering trying to make my harmony remote work with it but I'd have to get an IR receiver to do it. I already have a wireless 360 controller lying around so if I can make that work it'd be sweet. Have you checked out these skins? http://www.aeonproject.com/ - Aeon http://www.teamrazorfish.co.uk/ - Mediastream Both excellent skins. I prefer Aeon right now. Works great with a keyboard too. |

On the PC front, I'm sticking with PM3.HD skin-wise since it plays well with a mouse. Aeon and most of the others don't-they're clearly designed with remotes or Xbox pads in mind. (I still don't have a good grasp of the keyboard controls.) Still, it's nice to hear that there's more options skin-wise. I still have a bunch of questions, though. -Apparently, XBMC has a database of movies, TV episodes, and whatnot for whatever you have. How do you get all the art, episode info, etc.? I could understand movies having that info if XBMC lets you rip DVDs to the hard drive, but Xboxes don't have capture cards for recording TV episodes...or is it that you just download the info for a specific video file in a similar manner to updating album info for music files? (I'm still not too in-depth with the whole media center/HTPC concept, as computers are generally gaming and Internet machines in my eyes.) -When used on a system with a TV tuner, capture card, or some other device of that nature, will XBMC recognize it? I was thinking about the possibility of connecting a USB tuner/capture device to one of the Xbox's controller ports with the proper cable (all of which are really a somewhat proprietary variant of USB). -Does the Windows version support DirectInput or XInput? This is crucial if I'm going to get one of my Xbox pads working. -Why the hell does MC360 have no visible text in the Windows version, but works just fine on my Xbox? (Admitted, it's not suitable for PC use due to the aforementioned slant towards Xbox gamepads, but imagine using it on your PC with a wireless X360 pad!) -I don't expect this to be implemented until after Atlantis hits a stable, final release, but is it too much to ask to be able to view animated .GIFs beyond the first frame? It always irks me how so many photo viewers in media-oriented apps and devices don't handle those properly, be it a media center app, the one in my PSP, or whatever else. I only have one more remaining thing on my mind-how much space do I free up from removing Windows Media Center from my Vista install? Even in its current, still-largely-designed-around-the-Xbox state, XBMC is still a far superior solution in terms of usability and flexibility on the PC. |

update: you cannot control xbmc with a wireless 360 controller out of the box. You can do it but it requires some work to get it going (joytokey). Also, I have no problems with the text in the MC360 skin in Windows. Finally, I was able to get HD videos encoded in h.264 using the matroska container to play back semi-properly. I had to change my audio output from digital to analog and I had to turn off all de-interlacing and upscaling effects. Normally in something like Zoom Player I could use those but since xbmc is still in beta and all the video processing is dumped wholly on the CPU cycles (no GPU acceleration yet ) I had to sacrifice a few channels of audio and the 1080p upscale. That being said it still looks and sounds damn nice and to someone who's not a huge home theater nut I'd be willing to bet that they'd be impressed with the quality of it. Unfortunately, I am a home theater nut and I won't be truly satisfied with xbmc as a legitimate means of playing back my HD movies until I can upscale them to 1080p and send the audio through s/pdif to my receiver and not have it crash the playback. |

I fixed the MC360 text by just copying the skin folder from my Xbox. Apparently, one version of the skin on my PC's hard drive that I copied over to the XBMC install was broken. XBMC doesn't upscale? I thought that one of its biggest features (at least on the Xbox) was damn good upscaling of DVDs to HD resolutions...then again, you bring up HD movies being upscaled, which throws in another whole can of worms. I'm just looking for a slick interface that handles every kind of media I throw at it with ease and excellence. They've at least got the first part down pat. Also, may I ask what bindings you used for your X360 pad when using JoyToKey or some other similar app? |

a = enter b = backspace x = tab y = shift back = escape that's all you really need to navigate. I don't watch DVDs from the disc. I rip them to my HDD and convert them avi using gordian knot. I'll have to try watching a DVD from a disc and see how well it upscales. And yeah, I just download BD and HDDVD rips and watch those natively. 'member, XBMC does not support GPU acceleration so any upscaling is dumped totally on the CPU/memory bandwidth. |

No GPU acceleration? Damn, that's the only real reason why I keep Windows Media Player 11 installed-it seems to work the best with my 8800 GT's PureVideo 2.0 capabilities (in layman's terms, the GPU should take almost all of the load off the CPU when playing back even 1080p video). As for DVDs, I have ripped them to my hard drive before, but instead using a full version of FairUse Wizard 2 that I acquired while they were offering it as a free download (LEGALLY, mind you! It was on the official page!). Makes nice use of my Q6600, that's for sure. I wonder if that badaboom encoder for CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPUs would work even better, though...the main question there is if it'll throw up a fuss with any of my DVDs. |

I have a program called anyDVD in the background that takes care of the decryption. I mentioned before that Gordian Knot does all of my recodes. I prefer xvid format for the video compression. I'd rather compress them because it looks almost as good to me with a much smaller footprint on my drives. But yeah, no GPU acceleration. What I mainly use for watching stuff is a program called Zoom Player. It's awesome. I'm using the ffdshow tryouts (multithreaded video decoding FTW). I'm actually able to, using Zoom Player, output my audio through s/pdif and have my receiver decode the audio properly and even upscale a native 720p movie up to 1080p as well. My 720p upscales with ZP look better than 1080p native. I've checked thoroughly. |

You mean this? It looks like something I'll need for badaboom to access my DVDs directly, but I don't know if I want to spare the 62.57 US$ for it at the moment (perhaps with an additional 30 US$ for badaboom itself). Good thing it's got a trial... Also, if this is what you mean by Zoom Player, that's more money spent right there, especially considering the damn exchange rates screwing me over once again. Still, it seems as if it'll play anything I throw at it, which is good. There's also supposed to be a Standard version that is totally free for non-commercial use, whereas the Professional versions upwards are all trials; unfortunately, I can't find any links for this Standard version, adding to the confusion. Also, does it have good ASIO support? I usually use a combination of Winamp, an ASIO output plugin, and my Auzentech X-Fi Prelude set to Audio Creation Mode for music, at least. |

if there's an ASIO plugin for it, it should work. If there isn't, you could request it in the dev forums on the site. They're usually pretty good about stuff like that. But yeah, none of that is freeware except the standard version of ZP. The trial basically makes you wait a few seconds before opening it and you don't get access to some of the more advanced option settings. |
