so im trying to do a project for school that seems to be extremely easy. All im doing is backing up files, this is a intro class to operating systems. Sounds easy right? Wrong. Im using Windows Vista, the biggest load of shit ever (which I used to defend, oddly enough)

I went into backup and recovery, and set it to back up pictures (like my book says to do) and it tells me to insert a disc (with the label of the date on it), which I do. It tries to format it, it says it fails. I stubbornly try this over and over, intentionally doing the same thing over and over again because im absolutely sure I made zero mistakes in this attempt. Eventually, oddly enough it works! But.... It decided to say I cancelled the process, when I absolutely didnt. Actually, I think it was an error with that super annoying synaptic click touch right above where you actually click (laptop).

Anyway, I try it again only to have the original error again. I persist with doing the exact same thing again, and it eventually works. However, this time it shut my computer off and now my Vista partition does not boot and I cant even access it via Ubuntu.

Vista is a peice of shit that shouldnt even be on the market. Aside from this experience, many of the options require me to UPGRADE to another version of vista, in which I would have to shell out some more money for it.

Fuck that. I emailed my instructor, in hopes that she gives me some leeway here because im honestly super pissed off. It couldnt have been a virus, because I only usse my vista partition to do homework, in which I use school resources. I always find myself very frustrated when using Windows. I always have, but every since I started using Ubuntu (something that I would argue, actually works with you more than vista does) my frustration has increased tenfold.

has anyone else had such a problem with a simple backing up of files? Jesus christ.

I charge my cellphone off USB. I took it over to my uncle's house and plugged it into his computer before I went to bed. His bullshit Vista tried to sync up with my Windows Mobile, and now my clock doesn't work.

thats crazy.

the more i use alternate OS's the more I see how malicious windows can really be. Like it really does go out of its way to take over things. Another thing thats weird is that it intentionally wont show my ubuntu partition (unless I go into the partition manager, probably in hopes ill delete it or something)

the thing that really sucks though, is that this is a windows vista class. once im done with this class vista is getting wiped clean off this computer. I might get XP on here, but I dont know. I really dont want any windows products on here

its more than just the mess up where it destroyed the partition, its the fact that the backup utility straight up dosent work.

Everytime I use it, it reminds me why the work that goes into ubuntu is nothing in comparison to just NOT being allowed to do something

I have never had a major problem with vista. There are a lot of little things about it that I don't like though. Like if a program freezes and you have to open the task manager, it opens a whole new screen and if you are in a game, your resolution can change up to three times. That is annoying. And when you finally do close the program, Vista "Tries to find a solution" Which has never produced any success. So thats just one more thing you have to close.

I hate that Vista tries to hold your hand through everything.
Are you sure?

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. It's also V-lited. No Aero, no User Account Control, No IE7, no Windows Media Player11. The only thing it installs is the kernel, registry hives, the shell, my drivers and notepad. That's fucking all. And you know what? Not a single issue.

It's free. It basically allows you to remove unwanted components of vista (provided you have a retail copy of the vista install disc or can get one) so that you can create a custom installation. It lets you create an answer file for the install. It lets you slipstream drivers/updates/service packs into the install.

My vista installation from putting in the disc to sitting at the desktop ready to go takes about 15 minutes.

The main thing that really annoyed the hell out of me was User Account Control, but once I disabled it Vista hasn't been that much of an issue.

Nowadays, I don't have any problems, though the first time I ran Vista on my new PC, that install eventually started having strange issues (like any program dependent on the Ink library not working), which could only be solved with a reformat and re-install.

Ever since the first reformat, I haven't had any major issues that didn't need reformats to fix (only I ended up doing so anyway in a move of desperation to fix those issues, just to find out that it's still there). It probably had something to do with me slipstreaming SP1 into a new install disc with vLite. The only thing that irritates me right now is how Vista keeps changing up my folder views when I keep specifying a specific folder view for my most frequently visited folders.

Also, if Windows 7 does turn out to be more efficient while being more robust, they'd better have damn good upgrade pricing for Ultimate x64 users like myself. (Going OEM shaved the cost to 180-190 US$, but Home Premium x64 OEM would have been even cheaper at 115 US$ or so.)
