Well my budget is WAY less than that, and from looking around I realize that unless I choose to play live or as my main instrument - I don't really need a synthesizer. The reason I want to get something cheap and soon is because I'm going to be taking a piano class next semester and want to expand upon that. I'm assuming that there is a bunch of software that will sound okay with enough tweaking (yes, no?).
I saw some videos for the Yamaha you mentioned and it looks great but there's no way I'm affording that. In the meanwhile I'm thinking of getting a MIDI controller and then an analog synthesizer for some messing around. I'm still kind of unsure about how everything works, but will hooking up a

MIDI contoller ----> Synthesizer-------->Random Speaker

produce a sound?

What I'm thinking (this is only the research stage - google and youtube) is getting an
M-Audio Keystation 88ES
and messing around with included software and others I can find on the web while I record and learn how to play, and then down the line getting a cheap synthesizer for trance stuff like perhaps
DSI Mopho Monophonic Analog Synthesizer.

Does this sound like a feasible plan, or am I thinking too small and would be better off getting something more expensive?
By the way thanks for the help so far, appreciate it.

if you can handle running the controller through your PC then yes, you can find all sorts of real instruments that have been programmed to work with midi. They're called "soft samples" by people who use them. There are some great ones out there but the general midi bank should work and that's built into all PC recording software (properly referred to as a "sequencer"). You could get an m-audio controller and use that to play with, just load up a piano patch and your set. If you find something that you like as far as doodling around on it goes, you can just hit the record button since you're already in a recording program from the get-go. It's way cheaper and it uses the speakers you already have hooked up to your PC. It's totally not a setup you can use live though.

I want to get a keyboard, but I need to buy a new acoustic-electric and a multitrack recorder first.
