I hooked up my MIDI keyboard controller to my laptop the other day and installed some soft synths on it just to dick around with and ended up learning a few good tunes, in the style that I wanna play in my new band. Toto - Rosanna (including the sweet solo) Counting Crows - Round Here 3rd Eye Blind - Jumper Deadeye Dicks - New Age Girl Fastball - Out of my Head I'm having a lot of fun with it. What's better is when I get my new keyboard in December, I'll be able to chain them and get more stuff going at once. Fun stuff for Dave. Edited by whoozwah, Sunday, 2. November 2008, 21:12.

November, my latest unfinished song Lucidity, my solo project these obviously aren't the cover tunes you were looking for. They came from my head. Everything you hear is me...including the vocals. |

'preciate it bro. I'm starting up a band with some buds around here that's in the style of November/Carla. I'll keep the heavy stuff to myself and share the pop rock with the world. Prolly work out better that way. |

I enjoy the whole duality thing. A combination of the two would be borderline epic. |

I may cut a demo with the light/heavy sound but if any of this goes commercial, I think I want to keep the sounds apart. There's not much of a fanbase for hard rock in my area aside from a few clued-in people who know that the loud music's not from the devil. That and the music itself speaks to people in totally different ways. |

well think of it this way: if your heavy brand of music gets popular you'll get instant recognition in your area . |

not necessarily. No one would hear it anyway to know it's popular. I'll get recognition outside my area though. |

I reorganized my room to accommodate having band practice in it. I removed a lot of unnecessary wires, and integrated a 16 channel mixer into my live sound. This will give me much more room to experiment with stuff when more people are here at a time and we're all trying to hear what's going on. The mixer only has phantom power so the monitors must either be active or passive and run through an amp of some kind. I have a old old 8 channel peavy board that I ran my new mixer into and that's acting as my amp for my monitors. I have my keyboard set up and a vocal mic for that as well. I have my guitar rig set up with a foot pedal and a vocal mic on that too. I have another extra boom stand for the main vocalist and I'm working on making room for the drummer. Once I get my new keyboard at the end of the month, I'm going to have more room because I won't have to sit at a table to play. I'll have a stand so I can be wherever is easiest. I can post pics if anyone is even remotely interested. |

I was wondering if you (or anyone) could help me with my search for a keyboard. I'm thinking of using it for both learning to play piano and recording/playing some of my own pieces (mostly trance and "movie score" music). However, I don't know if a MIDI controller is the cheapest way to go about it. With a MIDI controller, is there any way to output sound to a speaker in a cheap way, or am I going to have to invest money into a keyboard with onboard speakers? I'm planning to buy "add-ons" down the road like synthesizers and such, but I want something I can buy now so that I can practice while I save up for more/better equipment. The thing is, I don't want to have to hook up my keyboard to a computer everytime I want to play it, but they're so much cheaper and appealing when they're simply controllers. if you don't want to hook up the board to a computer every time you play, you need a synth. If you want to use it for recording, you need a synth with a sequencer in it. You're not going to find a synth with built in speakers...at all. Only starter boards like 49 and 61 key casio boards have that. Junk you can get at best buy. I personally torn between the Yamaha MO6 and the Korg TR-61 when I started looking at boards. I finally went up going with the MO6 because it has: built in sequencer synth action keys (not hammer weighted like a piano0 touch sensitive patches. (plays louder the more pressure you put on the key) the analog instruments sounded better on the yamaha. The digital patches sound better on the Korg. The way the patches sound was the real selling point to me. Basically you need to make a list of all the things you want your keyboard to do. Write them all down. Then take them to a Guitar Center or Sam Ash or something and tell the dude what you want. He should show you the boards I looked at or something similar. He should also let you play on them. The way it feels and sounds is the most important thing once you start looking at a couple boards that satisfy all the other criteria on your list. You don't want a board that you don't like to play because it sounds or feels like junk. It's just like shopping for a guitar. It has to feel right, it has to be "yours" before you buy it. Hope this helps. |
