The greatest operating system in the world just got better. Ubuntu 8.10 features a faster interface, better hardware support. moar sexiness, the ability to create a USB drive with your whole OS installed on it, and all sorts of other things. Why haven't you installed Ubuntu yet? |

Fedora was once the best Linux distro by far, but in my eyes Ubuntu surpassed it with 7.04 and hasn't looked back. Which version of Fedora are you running? |

Woot for Linux! If there's a LiveCD for the new Ubuntu, I'm there. I only use Linux off LiveCD, though, because I hate dual-boot systems with a passion. |

There is more than a LiveCD. You can use one, but now they have live USBs. You can run an entire OS off of a flash drive. Also, look into Wubi for Ubuntu. It's sort of like a dual boot, but it involves no partitioning and you can uninstall Ubuntu through Windows if you so choose. |

Thanks for that. I'd never heard of this before, but this really ups the chances of me actually *installing* Ubuntu 8.10 on my PC. |

Of course there is a way. Go into your software sources and click updates. You should see a drop down menu that says "Long Term Support Releases" or something similar (I'm not on my home PC at the moment). Click normal releases, and the next time you have auto-updates to install there should be a button to click that will upgrade you to Intrepid Ibex. Just make sure all of your updates are installed before you try. |

Actually in many ways Fedora surpasses Ubuntu by far. -Has more native hardware support than anything Ubuntu offers from a fresh install, I was able to get all my hardware working without any work. -More support since it's built off from Redhat linux, so you can get Fedora & Red Hat packages. -.RPM (Fedora's own version of .deb like Mandriva, Ubuntu, etc.) are so much easier too find too download and easy to compile. -Updating is faster and only needs to restart for major kernal updates, unlike Ubuntu where I restarted about 4 times just too get my wireless working. -More pleasant too use, basically less sudo, su- and more just downright installing and using the operating system. -Live CD offers more options while installing. -Has more hardware developers behind it making drivers than Ubuntu. -And overall the look and feel is better than Ubuntu, Fedora has something going for it with the blue & white/gray theme. Ubuntu's brown and orange isn't too pleasant too look at, especially that new "We brought in a professional" interface Dark Room theme that looks like total shit. Plus i'm only waiting for Windows 7, which from the Beta i'm using blows Vista, XP & Fedora out the water. Edited by ronaldmonster, Tuesday Nov 4 2008, 02:22 PM.

It sounds to me like your experience with Ubuntu and Fedora were with older versions. I haven't had wireless issues with Ubuntu since Dapper Drake. I've restarted my Ubuntu desktop perhaps five times since I upgraded to 8.04 (I have since upgraded to 8.10). You can install .rpm files in Ubuntu. You just need Alien. Ubuntu is the most used and most supported distro out there, and has been for some time. The hardware detection is outstanding. I have Ubuntu on my desktop, Fedora on one laptop, and a Xubuntu/Puppy Linux dual boot on the other laptop. I can safely say that Ubuntu outperforms Fedora in every way. As for the look, that's subjective and it only really applies to an out of the box install. Both operating systems are highly customizable, andf you can quite easily make one look exactly like the other. |

I know you can, but it's just something that you don't have too worry about in Fedora hell it can even do .deb if I needed too. And I have a recent laptop from Sony, a Vaio NR. Basically has all the user unfriendly hardware that linux just can't get a grasp on (Atheros Wifi with a Linksys router, the latter of which the linux community has given up on when it comes to getting support.) and Fedora Core 9 (10 supposedly does it even better) detects it automatically. And that's true, but maybe that's why I don't like Ubuntu. It's just too ugly... |

I think Ubuntu is ugly too. the color scheme is awesome, it reminds me of metroid prime. But I hate how gnome looks. I like how organized it is though. I usually opt for the KDE desktop. Did you see KDE4? ::drool:: The problem with KDE is that gnome works a million times better with ubuntu =\ so im pretty much working on getting kde 4 to work for me |
