If you don't know, our votes don't actually chose the president. The people we vote for are the electors, who are the actual people who vote for the president. In other words, despite a popular majority, a candidate can lose an election because the electoral college votes in the interest of their electors.

Essentially, the states decide, not the people. However, each state has an appropiate number of representatives based on population.

However, I think this is a failure of a system. The Founding Fathers didn't put much faith in the common man to be up to date with politics, so they created this buffer. I can understand the reasoning from then, but nowadays, miss drug-addict hippy in Florida or her father mister red-neck wife beater in Alabama don't actually represent American interests.

I'd really rather not have LA and New York city make all the decisions for the US.

The electoral college gives small states a voice. I like it.

Against. I don't think any state should end up deciding which president wins the election.

Without the Electoral College, only New York, LA, and Chicago would matter. And they're all very liberal cities. We'd be a socialist state.

Well, the reason we have an electoral college is because if we didn't certain states would be able to bully all the others in regards to the election. Our system gives credence to the majority while allowing the minority to be counted.
Remember, our system consists of semi-sovereign states and a federal government. The states are not supposed to be subordinate to the federal government.

How can they be sovereign at all if it's illegal to secede?

Their not sovereign in the least bit. If they were, they would have the choice to secede. That's illegal.
They are supposed to be Semi-Sovereign. And "Having" the choice to secede is nonsensical. That would imply you were able to choose whether or not someone else would initiate force against you. I suggest you read the federalist papers and the anti-federalist papers to gain a better understanding of this issue.

Socialist in what way?

Because the populations of those cities are so large and they all trend very, very liberal. There would NEVER be a conservative elected president again. Without the electoral college, states with small populations don't mean dick.

I'm all for the electoral college, it should be a balance of the people and the government instead of 100% of one or the other.

To the books? Or to the semi-sovereign states thing? Because the states thing is an abstract ideal. which you can read about in the books I recommended.

I just wrote a long post and it didn't post. What the fuck.

Summary: I don't mind the electoral college. The general population is too uneducated to put the world's most powerful leader into office. EC is flawed, but better than leaving the vote solely to retards, rednecks, druggies and racists.

There are 4 fundamental flaws of the Electoral College:

1) As mentioned in OP, candidates can win the popular vote but still lose the presidency.
2) Votes are worth more in smaller states (because of the Senate).
3) States can choose electors differently.
4) Candidates alienate some states.

Those are some pretty big flaws. So this begs the question: why do we still have it, or why hasn't it been changed? Personally, I don't have that much faith in the American public to decide the election solely by popular vote because the margin of error is extremely high. Electoral votes keeps everything so much cleaner.

Another reason is: The American election is not a popularity contest. It's not like American Idol (or at least, it shouldn't be) where you can vote away the best guy and elect the piss-poor candidate because his hair looks cute.

Too many times have we had a drinking buddy rather than a president. The Electoral College at least helps to keep that number to a minimum.

Their opinions are just as valid as yours is, and it's incredibly elitist to assume that everyone except you votes out of ignorance.

It's still a popularity contest though, whether the EC is involved or not. They don't limit drinking buddy presidents because they pretty much just vote for who the people vote for.
