A new football league is going to have two "showcase games" this May, and their full debut season should be Spring 2015.

The league is called the A11FL, named after the A11 offense. The A11 offense is an unconventional style of football where all eleven players on the field can be eligible receivers and you can have more than one quarterback.

There are going to be eight teams. Six have been announced so far:
Bay Area Sea Lions
Chicago Staggs
Dallas Wranglers
Los Angeles Express
Tampa Bay Bandits
New Jersey Generals

The Bandits, Express, and Generals were all teams in the old USFL, a rival league to the NFL from the 1980s that produced players like Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, Herschel Walker, Gary Zimmerman, Sean Landeta, Reggie White, etc.

There are two more teams to be announced, and one is rumored to be in Denver.

If there's a team in Denver, I'll be getting season tickets.
Denver Broncos: defending champs, 8-6, next game 12/25 @ Kansas City Chiefs
Colorado Rockies: 75-87, missed playoffs
Colorado Avalanche: 11-18-1, next game 12/20 @ Minnesota Wild
Denver Nuggets: 12-16, next game 12/20 @ Los Angeles Clippers
Colorado Mammoth: first game 12/30 @ Buffalo Bandits
Denver Outlaws: defending champs, first game 4/22 @ Charlotte Hounds
Colorado State Rams football: 7-5, next game Idaho Bowl 12/22 vs Idaho Vandals
Colorado State Rams basketball: 8-4, next game 12/22 vs Long Beach State 49ers
Winnipeg Blue Bombers: 11-7, lost West Division Semifinal
Denver Pioneers Lacrosse: first game 1/24 vs Johns Hopkins Blue Jays
#2 Denver Pioneers Hockey: 12-3-3, next game 12/30 @ Providence College Friars

Sounds like the neighborhood football we used to play when I was a kid. Just WACKY. Though we lived on a very steep hill of a street. So one team had to go uphill...kinda unfair in hindsight. But kids are stupid!

Honestly, if you're going to last as a pro football league you have to differentiate yourself from the NFL. You can't beat the NFL at its own game; if you play traditional gridiron football your product will be inferior. The NFL has better players, more tradition, higher salaries, better stadiums, etc.

The only two leagues that have ever lasted were the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League. Ever since the AFL-NFL merger there have been many attempts to make a league with NFL-style rules (World Football League, United States Football League, World League of American Football/NFL Europe, XFL, United Football League, etc) and they all died in short order.

The CFL and the AFL have been able to stay around because they have their own venues, their own play styles, their own rules and traditions. If they tried to play the NFL's style of game nobody would care.

The CFL itself has only been around since 1958, actually. The NFL goes back to 1920.

But some of the actual teams in the CFL have existed since the late 1800s, so it's kind of weird.

What's nuts is that the Arena Football League is coming up on 30 seasons. No matter how badly their ownership groups consistently fuck up, there has been enough demand to keep it going since 1987 (except 2009, when only their minor league division played).
