Holy shit at the Rockies. 13-4, best record in baseball, undefeated at home. Who knows how long it will last, but there's reason to hope. Helton looks healthy and the rest of our lineup is potent (Fowler, Tulo, Gonzalez, Cuddyer, and Rosario could all hit 30 HRs this year). The big surprise has been the pitching, though. De La Rosa is healthy and picking up where he left off before he missed a year and a half with Tommy John surgery. 2.82 ERA through four starts. Chacin looks like a #1 starter, 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA. Francis sucks balls unfortunately, but Nicasio could still pan out. He's young and inconsistent. But man, Jon fucking Garland? He missed a whole season and he's pitching great right now. He's gone at least six innings in all three starts and hasn't given up more than 3 runs. 3.32 ERA, 2-0. |

Red Sox are 12-4. This team is much more likable than last year's team. No bobby valentine helps there, guy was a douche. I think having john Farrel back around helps the pitchers and the lack of discord and drama helps. Like with the Rockies it's still to soon to get overexcited but I like what I see so far. |

Rockies still looking good. Tyler Chatwood is 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA (and a .500 batting average at the plate with 4 RBI) in four starts this year for us. He's 23 years old. Also, Jorge De La Rosa. If you throw out last season (he only played in three games due to injury) his ERA has been falling every single year since 2006: 2006: 6.49 2007: 5.82 2008: 4.92 2009: 4.38 2010: 4.22 2011: 3.51 2013 so far: 3.40 He just keeps getting better and better. He has a 45-31 record in a Rockies uniform, compared to 15-23 with the Brewers/Royals. Chacin is our ace. So if we can get any sort of consistency out of Garland+Nicasio (or Roy Oswalt, if he makes it to the majors) this team is going to be hard to deal with. This really might be the best Rockies team of all time. |

Red Sox lead the AL East by two games after beating the Yankees today. Far exceeding expectations still. Funny how Toronto was the hot pick after the big trade and signings, but they are far behind even the fourth place team in the division. And the Yankees are in contention without some of their highes paid players. And the Angels and Dodgers suck after their big signings/trades (thanks for taking Josh Beckett off our hands). I think how teams win in the MLB is changing, though I struggle to say exactly how just yet. |

The Rockies are sliding... god we need Tulo back. But damn, Cuddyer is killing it. 24 game hitting streak, and over the span he's hitting .390 with 5 homers, 16 RBI. And Rex Brothers has still only given up ONE run on the year, all the way back on April 6. He has a 0.27 ERA, 34 strikeouts, 16 walks, and 22 hits in 33 innings. .189 batting average against and 3.95 pitches per plate appearance. Dude is absolutely ridiculous. |

Tulo is just one of those guys who can't seem to make it through a season playing more than 120 games. Same goes for clay buchholz, who has been the best pitcher in the al when healthy. Without him the red Sox pitching is much worse, but they keep winning anyway for the most part. |

Gonzalez and Fowler have both been playing hurt since the day Tulo went down, and they're both struggling too. That one game took a lot of power out of our lineup. If this team is healthy going down the stretch they're going to be tough: 1B Todd Helton 2B DJ LaMahieu/Josh Rutledge 3B Nolan Arrenado SS Troy Tulowitzki RF Michael Cuddyer LF Carlos Gonzalez CF Dexter Fowler C Wilin Rosario/Yorvit Torrealba That's a deep hitting lineup there. The Rockies might get 35 homers and a .300 average from their catcher position which is insane in this day and age. Helton is only hitting .240 but in the first two months he was hitting in the .100s, and he's always been a second half player. And Arrenado is a god damn Gold Glove rookie third baseman who can hit a fucking curveball. I can't believe a third base prospect finally fucking worked out for this team (Chris Nelson and Ian Stewart were both hailed as the successor to Vinny Castilla). And the rotation is strong at the top. Chacin, De La Rosa, and Chatwood are a good 1-2-3 in the NL. The back end is going to have to work itself out but between Oswalt, Nicasio, and Pomeranz I think we'll get that worked out. The other thing that's really hurting us is the bullpen injuries. Betancourt and Escalona will be back next week, and we really fucking need it. Brothers is our only reliable option right now. Matt Belisle is fucking exhausted, having led the league in appearances three years running. He's a great pitcher but he's carrying too heavy a load right now and it's showing. A 4.95 ERA is not at all like him. Hopefully when those other two guys get back they can stop pitching Belisle so much and he'll return to his normal mid 2.00s-low 3.00s ERA like we usually see. |

Helton has hit two three-run homers tonight. I can't remember the last time he did that. So sad that he's finally healthy and he's now 40. If he could have stayed healthy from 2006-2012 he'd go down as one of the top five first basemen ever. |

Wow, didn't realize that he hasn't hit 20 hr since 2005. Always a shame when a good player like that is limited by something that's hard to fix like a bad back. |

Watching Helton's last home game. Amazing to see him with a homer and a sac fly so far. Finishing up his career leading the NL in fielding percentage this season, and he's fifth on the all time list. Derek Lee and Albert Pujols both stole some of Todd's Gold Gloves because they had better hitting years than Todd. Such bullshit. Todd is the best defensive first baseman of this generation, maybe the best since Steve Garvey. |

GOld Glove awards are usually a joke. Robinson Cano is the popular choice at 2B these days even though most statistics place him as an average defender at 2B. Worse than that is Derek Jeter, who I think I read was one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball history, yet won multiple gold gloves. Both are/were very good overall players, but like Pujols and Lee (for a few years) play in bigger markets and end up with awards they don't deserve as a result. |

I admit I gave up on them, but the Sox came back to win. Two improbable comebacks by New England teams in the same day. David fuckin' Ortiz, guy's still got it. And Koji Uehara may well be the most dominant pitcher in the MLB right now. Finished the season with a 1.09 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, 101 SO, 9 BB in 74 1/3 IP. All that at 38 years old. |

Personally, none of the steroid/PED users (Alleged like Ortiz or proven/admitted like Arod) from before it was technically illegal really bother me that much. I think Bonds, Clemens, McGuire, Sosa, etc should easily be hall of fame. If you want to put a note on their plaque that mentions steroids fine, I have no issues with that. But to erase a whole era of baseball over steroids is stupid because it wasn't against the rules and the mlb won't do shit given how much money they made then. But after it was made illegal anyone who does it deserves a long suspension at least in my mind. The rules are clear and when you get the Arods obstructing investigations and the melky Cabrera's making fake websites to cover it up its even worse. |

All three of the Molina brothers have a career .994 fielding percentage. Also all three have two World Series rings (though Bengie's second ring is weird because he was traded from the team that won the World Series to the team that lost it right before the playoffs). Just was looking at their stats and thought it was interesting. Hope the Cardinals beat the AL, but really as long as Boston loses I'll be happy. |
