With over 3 million on Kickstarter in under 2 days, at that!

They proclaim that it's a very open platform, hardware and software alike. Pretty nifty for a console, but what's to stop me from connecting a gaming PC to an HDTV and home theater speaker system?

The specs are in line with a typical smartphone:

•Tegra3 quad-core processor
•1GB RAM
•8GB of internal flash storage
•HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
•WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
•Bluetooth LE 4.0
•USB 2.0 (one)
•Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
•Android 4.0

Something tells me that 8 GB of storage won't last long, and you'll have to use that single (they couldn't even add just one more and not force us to buy a USB hub?) USB 2.0 port to add an external hard drive pretty quickly.

On the other hand, if the reward pricing is anything to go by, they're just $100 each-less than I was expecting. Guess they have to keep the cost down somehow.

Here's the part that will really piss off famicommander, though: it's a console built around digital distribution. Before you say "free games!", they claim that they're following more of a "free-to-play" model, which is bound to result in plenty of nickel-and-diming through microtransactions.

Thoughts?

For me it depends on the implementation of the FTP model. If it's pay to win they can fuck off, but if I have access to a more or less complete experience without buying anything extra, I'm okay with it.

Also, obviously, the games themselves.

Wondering if this will also function as an Onlive/Netflix device, because if so I am more interested. I still use the Playpack for Onlive and sometimes also use it for demos, so having a device connected to the TV with that functionality would be a bonus.

Some quotes from their FAQ page:
"For gamers, every game will be free to play: what this means is that there will at least be a free demo, or you’ll be able to play the entirety of the game for free but may have access to additional items, upgrades, or other features that come at a cost."

"For hackers: root it. Go ahead. Your warranty is safe. Even the hardware is hackable. Want to get inside? You’ll need a standard screwdriver and nothing more. Go to town. We have standard USB ports and Bluetooth, so you’ll even be able to create your own peripherals."

"We expect to have a finished product ready to ship to you in March."

"For developers, open means that any developer can publish a game – if you've got a game, you can put it on OUYA. You can price your game however you like – it's your game! We just want to analizer you bring it to life on the TV. Just make some part of the experience free to the OUYAs. We use open-source software and standard chipsets – we're on Android because developers are speaking the language. Our chipsets aren't proprietary or secretive – open OUYA up and have a look! We’ll even publish the hardware design if people want it."

Sounds good so far. I will keep an eye on it.

If anything it sounds like it will just have value as a set top media box.

There's a game request form on the website. I requested PSO2 and Onlive support.

I almost want too but I want to make sure this "thing" is actually a damn thing. The only reason I contributed to Wasteland 2 was because Zenimax sent people to work on it.

Ed Fries is involved and he was one of the designers on the first Xbox.

Also he made Halo 2600.

Would be interested if I can get my Android emulators on it. And a way to have a larger storage medium (such as USB flash, our HDD).

They already said you can use external storage. And since it's going to be rootable you should be able to install any emulator that works on Android.

People donating that kind of cash probably are doing it as a capital investment they can write off on their business. No gamer would make that kind of investment.

The Ouya system will have OnLive support at launch.

That's very good news. Playpack is a good deal and this effectively gives the system a library of hundreds of "known" games from the start.

Just confirm Netflix support and I'll probably bite.
