I already have a PS2 disc full of those nice ladies. $30? Hilariously enough, that's about how much I paid for my Chromium A-Go-Go book. Yup...$30 comic book. (I think it was like $28.50something)

It's becoming an annual circus that we all have free tickets to. A new BioWare game is released, and there's a catastrophic fallout of complaints, accusations, and histrionic rage. Some of it's ridiculous, some of it's justified, but all of it can prove entertaining for the spectators.

Mass Effect 3 may have been the wildest attractions yet, with metabombs, photo scandals, and now this -- an accusation that BioWare lied to the faces of its fans when it claimed that the game's "From Ashes" DLC had been developed separately, after the game shipped.

You don't tell fans something like that without expecting them to go digging in the game's files after it's launched. Obviously, that happened.

An article on the Crystal Prison Zone blew the lid off the controversy, posting a mass of files that seem to prove that the launch day DLC's content is safely stored on the Mass Effect 3 disc. Had the content been separately developed after the game went gold, this shouldn't be possible.

"For instance, the build which leaked in November, the official demo, and now the standard retail release of Mass Effect 3 all contain voice files for the Prothean squad member," writes the Prison Zone. "There's also a full set of model and animation files for the Prothean, but file encryption makes it impossible to open these for further inspection. These files are just as big as they are for other, non-DLC characters, suggesting that the art, animation, and voice assets for the DLC character were developed at the same time, not after the completion of the project.

"If these assets were developed after end of development, they would have to be downloaded - not unlocked directly from the disc."

The evidence is being used to suggest that BioWare lied to its fans. For example, producer Michael Gamble stated that "From Ashes" had been developed by a separate team, and was "not completed until well after the main game went into certification." This statement was echoed by executive producer Casey Hudson on two different occasions.

I contacted Electronic Arts and was told, "We've already made our comment on the matter." I was linked to a forum thread which reiterated Gamble's statement that the DLC was made separately.

That explanation has not been good enough for a number of fans, who believe they've been deceived. The file for the DLC is around 560MB, implying that either there is plenty of content still left off the disc, or that it's mostly fake dummy data used to pad out the numbers. That all depends on what you want to believe, really.

It's important to note that BioWare never said "From Ashes" was started after the main game went into certification. They only said it was finished after that time. It is not unreasonable to assume that the DLC was worked on by a separate team while Mass Effect 3 was still in development, and that part of the content was stored on the disc, to be completed via download later. Yes, it's still possible that BioWare is lying through it's teeth and had the DLC finished well in advance, but that's not to say it's the only viable answer on the table.

Of course, one can also consider that the Prothean character was leaked over a year ago. If there were plans so far back, exactly how long did it take to make this DLC? Those who choose to believe they were lied to certainly have some things to be suspicious about, at least.

With EA still standing by BioWare's statement, this is very much a case of one side's word against another. Whatever the truth is, this is yet another bitter chapter in the story of the BioWare fan community, and the combative relationship between the studio and its followers.

Hip hip hooray

I hope someone chops off the dicks and tits of every male/female writer who had anything to do with those endings. You know it's bad when a forum full of retards who once took a poll and admitted they'd pay a yearly fee to play Bioware games has gotten together and admitted Bioware fucked up BADLY.

After I bought it and came home from the midnight launch and went about my way to install it and acquiring the crack I noticed the notes also said something about "Unlocks DLC" but I never downloaded or bought the DLC from Origin.

I simply installed it from the disc with no updates, no additional downloads, nothing. Deleted Origin and I played my game and eventually received the e-mail for a new Prothean artifact. Assumed it one of the many artifact related quest and boy was I wrong.

I feel bad for anyone who paid for this DLC to realize they've been spit in the face by a company I once respected. He offers so much insight to the world it isn't even funny. Tons of conversations. Backstory, cinematics, etc. I eventually kept him in my party for the next 18 hours while finishing up the game and in a way I can't imagine playing it with anyone but Liara and The Prothean since their races closely match the lore of the universe.

The sheer amount of information he posses is MIND BAFFLING and fucking INSULTING that it wasn't included. You can't tell me any book readers would stand for an author saying "I'm ripping out an important story chapter but you can happily have it for 10 dollars!" and honestly expecting to come out ahead with his audience.

People are noticing the pattern and are obviously starting to complain. I understand that things change and evolve but the fact remains that if you keep screwing your source of money, you have to buy us roses from time to time. And bioware better get started because the PR damage control combined with that they literally JUST changed the rules on the forum to stop any complaining what-so-ever is going to be a cold day in hell before I purchase a game from them again.

Based on what I've been reading, it seems that the "From Ashes" DLC is not entirely on the disc. Most of the character information is there, but not the mission or some other things (apparently they did the same thing with Zaeed and Katsumi in ME2). This seems to provide a pretty good explanation, overall. I don't think this justifies having premium, near story-essential day 1 DLC by any means, but at least it isn't as bad as having the whole DLC on the disc already and lends some credence to EA's explanation that it was developed later. Or maybe it was held back intentionally, who knows.

I have the first two games (which I haven't even finished yet for some reason), both bought for $5 each well after their releases. Gotta love digital distribution sales. (And since they tend not to care about game sales by that point...)

I might as well do the same for ME3, especially if they re-release it with all the DLC included or whatnot. (Even if they didn't really do it for ME2, the possibility still stands.)

I wouldn't buy the game even if it were a penny and also the world's greatest game.

But then again, I think Bioware is a pretty terrible developer lately anyway. Dragon Age 1 and 2 and Mass Effect 1 and 2 are like AIDS on a cable bill compared to Baldur's Gate or KOTOR.

Have either of you guys playing the game beaten it yet? People are really pissed about the ending, like really really pissed, and I'm curious to know what you guys thought (without spoiling anything) if you've gotten there.

They introduced a Deus Ex Machina to end a trilogy that was centered predominantly on making choices, and those choices leading to lasting impact.

Instead, what we got was this "god"/AI where it directs Shepard to screw everyone over no matter the choice. In Mass Effect 1 & 2, our choices actually influenced the ending. In Mass Effect 3, it didn't even close the franchise, it just brought a contrived end to the war to end all wars all without even allowing us to see where our Shepard's path impacted an entire inter-galactic war.

We don't get to see what happened to the Krogan. Or how the Quarian and Geth got along after ending a 300+ year war. The clean-up after everyone on the space-citadel was outright slaughtered. What about destroying the Mass-Relay points? The quarian can't rebuild with no access to supplies. The Krogan will essentially die out with no access to scientist to help clean Tuchanka's atmosphere. What the hell happened to Shepard? Did they not realize by destroying the only link for planetary transport they're going to slowly kill off every species anyway? Let's not forget that machines which traveled billions of lightyears away just came to wreck our shit and

There isn't any closure and it's just lazy. Nothing about any ending seems right and nearly everyone has come to a conclusion that we feel like we wasted our time. I know the underlying story is about sacrifice, the importance friends and reliable allies, the overall journey of HOW we got there, But what Bioware did was well beyond a slap in the face.

I know writing in video-games isn't exactly going to be stacking up to Notes from Underground or War & Peace anytime soon and our Fallout 2, Planescape Torments and Silent Hill 2's are few and far between. But when you manage to have 2 Hollywood writers, 2 Authors and a veteran writer it REALLY makes you wonder how the hell those endings happened.

Finished my insanity run last night with my soldier continued all the way from ME1. Things got pretty difficult and hectic in those last few missions. And I see what you mean about the ending, I find it disappointing that no closure on how things turn out with the other races is offered, and that with the Mass Relays destroyed, it pretty much destroys everything the game universe had to offer, as everyone is essentially permanently isolated. Disappointing, though not enough I'd make an uproar over it.
