How are you unemployed, yet have 100Mb internet? Are you squatting in the maintenance closet of an ISP? |

Just checked my local ISP and 100Mb up/down is only like $130 a month. That's not too bad I guess. |

I'd love a gigabit connection. I wired my house with cat6 and all my hardware is gigabit. What you use a Gb connection for? Personally I setup a slew of mail/web servers and provide hosting for small businesses. I'd also have a couple permanent game servers. |

I would use it to post pictures of my speedtests on internet forums and tell everyone else in the world to fuck off because I have gigabit. |

Yeah. The initial state benefit is 26 weeks, but there are several tiers of benefits from state/federal that can extend it up to 99. I'm enjoying my time off, but I couldn't stand being out of work for 2 years, well unless I had millions and never had to worry about money again. Fun facts: The benefit does not require repayment. yay! It is considered taxable income so you have to pay taxes on it. boo! The fund that unemployment draws from is paid for by a tax your employer pays, and not individual tax payers, so I don't feel like a total leech. yay! Due to the down time, my house has never been this clean. boo!. |

It's even funnier since, if you made a good wage, unemployment will pay more than most of the places that are hiring right now. I know someone who was a manager at Food Lion before they had the mass layoffs, and his unemployment pays at least as much as the starting pay at other grocery stores. So getting a job would mean working 40 more hours a week just to collect the same amount of money. Needless to say, he has decided that he isn't even going to bother looking for work for at least a few months. The only downside is that if you go too long without having a job, it's harder to get hired anywhere. If you've got a two year employment gap on your resume, you're not going to find a decent job. |

To an extent. Each state is different, but there is a maximum benefit that you can qualify for. In AL the max you can get, regardless of how much salary you were previously getting, is $265 a week. They look at the first 4 quarters of the last 5 quarters you worked, then average the two highest quarters (gross pay) and your benefit amount (up to $265) is a certain percentage of that average (IIRC in AL it is 4%). This sucks cause it means you could have made 100k and would still get the same benefit that a person who makes 30k would get. In GA the max is $330. So I get $1060 a month. Not great by any means, but it actually covers all of my expenses. If I didn't have a roommate or if I had a bunch of debt/bills it would suck. |
