Pretty much all LCD types are TFT, but if it only says that, it's probably a cheap TN panel. IPS actually isn't that new of a technology, but it was confined to higher price brackets until the recent development of the cheaper eIPS variant, all of which are going to be widescreen. Of course, the only way to be sure aside from reading educated reviews is to look at the LCD yourself when possible, especially shifting your vertical viewing angle. If there's an extreme color shift or even inversion when looking from below and it looks washed-out when looking from above, it's TN. |

it's unfortunate that the actual manufacturing method used isn't made more clear when listing detailed specs. As it stands right now, I cannot walk into a store near me and look at a non-widescreen panel on display. I have to order one online so I cannot look at it first to verify the presence or absence of the visual distortion you're describing.

so I spent the last few hours tinkering with those CRT overlay settings in mame. What I did to try to get them as accurate to an actual arcade monitor as possible was to fire up streets of rage 2 on my commodore 1084s-d1 in RGB mode and have my laptop right next to it for side-by-side. Had mame running pixel aspect ratio. Got both games to the same point and paused it and went to town. I adjusted several settings, many of which were related to color correction, brightness/contrast/gamma as well as adjusting the richness, height and frequency of the scanlines to match that of the CRT monitor. Even made an adjustment for pincushion so the edges of the emulation window are oh so gently rounded off. I didn't get it EXACTLY the same (there's a bit of magic glow in CRT monitors that just cannot be replicated on digital panels) but I got it so goddamn close that I ended up being happy with the results.
