How did this game fly under my radar?

It's an open-world fishing game from Yuji Naka (Sonic, Phantasy Star, NiGHTS, Ivy the Kiwi, Let's Tap) for the Wii.

It supports Wii Motion Plus and comes bundled with its own fishing controller.

I bought the game about a week ago, and wow. It's a hell of a lot of fun. It's the sort of game for people who like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon.

Basically, there are hundreds of different fish in the game. It takes place on a resort island with lots of different stuff to do. There are oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds to fish in, boats and bicycles to rent, tours to take, classes to help learn the game, customizable avatars, online leaderboards, and a lot of other stuff to keep you interested.

Catching fish gets you points. You get more points for catching new fish, and still more for catching the larger fish of a given type. You can use these points to unlock new rods, reels, lures, bait, and various other character customization and transportation options.

You are also awarded points based on your technique when you fish. Your timing in setting the hooks, your ability to manage tension on the line, your lure techniques, and your actual movements when reeling in fish come into play.

The more points you get, the higher rank you achieve. The higher your rank, the more locations and equipment become available to you.

Various NPCs will give you a wide variety of quests which range from catching fish (duh) to simple delivery missions. The missions naturally get more complex as the game moves forward.

This isn't a fishing simulator so it isn't extremely difficult to land fish, but the game does have a certain challenge to it. I love that so much of it is self-directed.

Yuji Naka really is a master of minimalistic game design. I never, ever expected to have so much fun with a budget-priced fishing game (20 dollars without the fishing rod controller, 30 with). I only bought the game because I have gotten all the miles I'm going to get out of SEGA Bass Fishing, but I now find this game really cutting into my Mario Kart and Star Trek Online time.

The fishing controller itself is pretty cool, too. It opens up and stores the remote inside, but it also has a cord wrap to keep your nunchuck cable from getting tangled. It works pretty well.

Overall, I'd say watch a few Youtube videos if you're interested in the game. It's really fun and relaxing.

Speaking of fishing games and fishing rod controllers, I distinctly remember that the Dreamcast had one, but don't recall what game it was used with.

Given your knowledge on the Dreamcast and all other things Sega, perhaps you can remind me?

Both very good games, by the way. Much better than that Rapala or Cabela's trash from this generation. The first one was remade for Wii.

Wow, Prope has got to be happy with these sales:
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/51721/fishing-resort/

Over 220,000 worldwide and it has only been released in North America and Japan. That's already more than Ivy the Kiwi and Let's Tap (Prope's previous two releases) sold combined.

Ah, I remember you mentioning this game at work a while back. Haven't played a decent fishing game in well over 10 years, so I might end up checking this one out.

A redneck wouldn't buy a Japanese fishing game, a redneck would buy the one officially licensed by the Bass Pro Shop.

Anyway, like I said in the OP: if you've ever enjoyed a Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing type game, you'll have fun with Fishing Resort.

Whoa, back up a moment. Did you say "free DLC" there, like it used to be a decade ago?

At the rate the industry is heading, I wouldn't be surprised if they started charging us for patches eventually.

No, I haven't bought it yet, but I already have this massive backlog of titles to catch up on, and as soon as I get a Wiimote Plus, all my Wii time is going to be spent on Skyward Sword.

Can't fault you for prioritizing Zelda, but I do want Prope to get every dollar they deserve for this game.

One of the guys from Xseed was saying that how the game sells in the coming weeks will determine whether they think it's worthy of a second print.

Also, Namco owns the publishing rights for Europe and they seem to be dragging their ass with that release. If it keeps selling in North America hopefully it'll get released over there.

Yuji Naka is just so much better than most other game directors. Ivy the Kiwi might be one of my top five games of this generation.

I hated the fishing minigame in Zelda everyone else seemed to love, so it doesn't seem like something I should get.
