Anyone keep up with college hoops?

My main team Syracuse has a 22-1 record and they just won a close game at home today against West Virginia. Feels good man. Big East is gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.

My other team Duke got a win today at home as well, against St. Johns and yes while I'm obliged to have some love for St. Johns, I like Duke more. Blue Devils all day son. And I totally had Duke winning it all in my bracket last year. <o/

As you can expect, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State, and UCLA are leading their conferences as well.

I try to follow it but the are a lot of things that irritate me about college basketball.

The shot clock is way too long and they give the players ten fucking seconds to get the ball across half court. The pace of the game is so much slower that comebacks are much more difficult, so many times teams just blatantly stall in the second half if they jump out to a decent lead. It's frustrating to watch that kind of basketball. Even without the blatant stalling the pace is just too slow.

The quality of play is nowhere near the NBA. I obviously don't expect college players to be as good as professionals, but I pointed it out because I believe the difference in quality of play between college and pro basketball is MUCH bigger than the difference between college and pro football.

Plus playing two halves instead of four quarters is stupid.

That said, I have been keeping up mostly because all the major colleges here are having good seasons. My favorite team, Colorado State, beat #12 SDSU by 17 today.

UMass won today and leads the A-10 conference right now. Pretty cool, I hope they can keep it up.

So since someone made the thread, I'll contribute some more.

My favorite team is of course CSU, and they're 14-6 on the season with wins against #12 SDSU and rival Colorado. Next they play on February 4 @ #13 UNLV, so it should be a tough one. Back-to-back wins against ranked teams would be pretty awesome.

Air Force is my second favorite school, and they're currently 11-8. They were having a really nice season until they lost four in a row, including this Saturday against UNLV in OT (by two points).

Denver is also having a good season, which really came out of nowhere. They haven't been good for as long as I can remember, but this year they're 16-6 overall and are in a good position in the Sun Belt Conference at the moment.

Colorado is 14-7 on the year, but I fucking hate them so who cares.

I generally don't give a shit about college basketball outside of maybe the title game, but since I go to UMass I guess I want them to do well. I know they were picked to finish last in the A-10 in the preseason, and now they are leading it. There's still plenty of games left to be played, especially against Xavier down the road, but UMass has to be one of the more surprising teams in the country considering the expectations.

Yeah college basketball sure is a different beast compared to pro basketball. Personally I dunno if it's better or worse. Just....... different. There are several things about it that I like though.

I like the change in pace. I find that the longer shot clock leads to better and sometimes more methodical ball movement. There is a bigger emphasis on passing the ball around and getting a good look as opposed to catching and shooting.

And I disagree with the notion that comebacks are more difficult. College players are a lot streakier than NBA players. A team can have a 17-3 run one moment, and then suddenly not make a single field goal for 5 minutes. Or they could be 0 for 10 and then make 12 straight field goals and then go back to missing everything. My point is, good teams go on deficits often and bad teams have their share of runs. You don't really see that kind of unpredictability in the NBA. In Duke's last game, they had a 22 point lead late in the 2nd half and St. Johns cut it to 4 with 20 seconds left on a sick run.

Also, intentional fouling is a lot more useful in college basketball than in the NBA since college players miss free throws regularly and the losing team has more time to put up a shot and then repeat the process. I've seen a lot of games won this way.

Lastly I like how college fans are usually a lot more into their team than NBA fanbases and it's mad energetic for the home team. Syracuse games tend to have the biggest turnouts in the league and it's always a good time. I saw an Atlanta Hawks game the other day and I swear half the arena was empty and the other half was lifeless.

Oh my god what a day. Two intense ass rivalry games.

Syracuse beat Georgetown at home, in OT. Still have only one loss for the season <o/ Jim Boeheim recorded his 880th win, which now puts him in 3rd place in all-time wins for Division I coaches. The only people ahead of him are Mike K and Bob Knight.

Speaking of Mike K, Duke beat #5 UNC today on their court. Rivalries don't get much better than this. UNC was up by 10 with 2 minutes left, but Duke cut it to 2 with 6 seconds left. Freshman Austin Rivers (Doc Rivers's kid) made the game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.... and the rest is history. You gotta YouTube that shit.

He led the team with 29 points, which is also the most a freshman has ever scored in this rivalry. I have no doubt that he'll be a very high draft pick when he submits for the draft (might even be this year). One of the best freshmen I've ever seen.

Just say the replay, pretty sweet. I have to say though, Dick Vitale sounds horrible.

Looks like my Rams are going to make the tourney.

They beat TCU by 21 today in the quarter finals of the MWC tournament. They play SDSU, with whom they've split two games this season, tomorrow night.

Go Colorado State.

UMass just upset #24 Temple in the A-10 tourney. They are on to the semi-finals, so two more wins and they'd be in, as unlikely as it may have seemed during their late season tumble.
