Naturally, I thought back to my own childhood and remembered a certain game that emphasized multiplayer for competitive and trading purposes, but never really got to use back then save for one or two instances. Of course, it would be much, much easier today with Wi-Fi support and all that. Only problem is, I'm not sure he'd actually get a lot of the nuanced mechanics they've added with the last few generations, but perhaps he doesn't need to if he's not playing in tournaments. He might be able to get by just fine doing what I did as a kid and spamming Hyper Beam on everything, not to mention trading with me every now and then. Should I? |

Then it's decided. I will show him the way of throwing balls at wild animals and making them fight for fun and profit. I'll probably give him White while I get Black. |

Good way to go. Pokemon Black and White are definitely the best games in the series since the first. |

I think you should get him Heart Gold or Soul Silver. Those are the definitive Pokemon game imo. |

Gold and Silver (and thus their remakes as well) are great, but in my opinion the pacing is off. Everything is so scrunched together, both in terms of literal geography and in terms of the timing of major game events. I felt like I was being rushed along from one point of focus to the next with less time for leveling up, exploring, etc. For me R/B > B/W > G/S > R/S > D/P Edit: I also liked how Black and White simplified the Pokedex to focus mostly on a smaller number of new monsters, as with D/P and R/S there were so many damned Pokemans I didn't know what was which type, what evolved into what, what attacks were learned at what levels, etc. Nothing beats the original 151, but the renewed focus of B/W was quite refreshing. It's pretty damned hard to keep track of 560 or however many fuckers there are now. |

If I'm going to introduce him to 2nd-gen, I'll hand him my Gold cart while I use Crystal. (Don't have Silver, sorry.) Though in that case, I'd also have to get him a GBC and hope he won't find a way to break it like he keeps breaking the hinge on his DS Lite. (Apparently, he keeps abusing it whenever something goes badly in-game, so yeah. At least a solid chunk of handheld like the GBC has no hinges to break. He might even have got a surprise 3DS if not for that...) Edited by NamelessFragger, Monday Jan 16 2012, 08:29 PM.

He keeps breaking his DS? Smack him right upside his head. Problem solved. |

Get him one of those old Tiger LCD games. He has to learn to take care of tiny hardware before he graduates to big boy portables. I recommend Wolverine or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. |

That's not the way this family works. I'm to leave the smacking to my stepfather. Anyway, Black/White. Is there anything we need to know when starting out? |

Not really. It was meant to be a "fresh start" for the series and as such does a great job of introducing new players to the mechanics of the series (but without sacrificing complexity for those who want it). |

Curious. Why do you think R/B is the most superior one Fami? It was great but extremely unbalanced. |

I liked the selection of Pokemon the best, I like the pacing and the dungeon design, and I enjoyed the gym battles and Pokemon league moreso than in late games. Also, I'm sure my age and nostalgia are factors. When the game came out I was eight years old. It was such a huge sensation back then and it was so new and unlike any other game I had played before. I have a lot of great memories playing those games, fighting with my brothers over the Game Boy, trading with friends, finding out about all of the glitches you can exploit, battling with friends... None of the games that came afterwards had that "wow" factor for me. Later games in the series are just an evolution of the groundwork that Red/Blue laid. It felt so inspired. |

I just gave him Pokemon White a few minutes ago. He likes it! (And if you care what starter he chose, he picked Smugl-I mean Snivy.) Only problem is, his DS Lite's more messed up than usual. It shuts off immediately after the bottom screen lights up. But being the nice guy I am, I'll let him get started on my own DS until that one gets fixed. In the meantime, though, no trading or anything else like that. |
