We’re really excited to announce the OnLive app for mobile: our new free app that makes the latest, highest-performance games available for instant play on millions of tablets and smartphones in the US and UK. That’s right: gone are the days of needing a console or high-end computer to access top-tier games. With the OnLive app, your tablet or phone is your console, providing instant, on-demand play of AAA titles like Batman: Arkham City, L.A. Noire and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, anytime and anywhere you want to play.

To kick off this historic day in gaming, we are launching with a growing library of over 20 console-class games via touch control, including LEGO Batman: The Videogame, Defense Grid Gold, Dirt 3, Split Second, Darksiders and many more. Just download the free OnLive app and try them for FREE.

Soon, you can also get a grip on your game with the new OnLive Wireless Controller, which is compatible with many tablets and phones, enabling fast-action game play with almost every game in OnLive’s entire catalog of nearly 200 titles.

As always, almost all OnLive games are cross-platform, so you can start a game on your TV at home, continue it on your tablet on the train to work, then sneak in a session during your lunch break on PC or Mac, each time dropping seamlessly into the action just where you left off, with full cross-platform multiplayer and social features. With both Wi-Fi and mobile network support (especially the new low-latency 4G LTE), you have the power to play almost anywhere—on any device, indoors or outdoors.

While we are working as fast as we can to get the OnLive app for mobile working on as many tablets and smartphones as possible, bear in mind that we can’t exactly predict how long it will take to get through app store certification, especially during the holiday season. So, if OnLive is not available on your mobile device today, hang in there. Also, we are working with publishers to expand the library of touch-controllable games. More great games are coming with incredibly creative touch and motion interfaces.

This is a big milestone for gaming: now tablets and smartphones—the fastest-growing category of consumer electronic devices in history—can play the latest and highest-performance games, without compromises, and without big downloads gobbling up local storage. It’s amazingly cool.

Check it out for yourself wherever you are: pick up your tablet or smartphone, get the free OnLive app, and just play.

http://blog.onlive.com/2011/12/07/onlive-goes-mobile-a-new-era-in-gaming/

I tried it out and it works incredibly well. I played LEGO Batman and noticed very little latency over WiFi on my phone. The touch controls kind of suck, but they work just as well as with dedicated Android/iOS devices (that is to say, they're responsive and functional but still suck because touch screen analog control blows).

The idea of the OnLive controller working on my phone is intriguing. I can't for the life of me imagine carrying a controller everywhere I go, but I did get the controller with my OnLive Microconsole and it really is awesome. I don't see it taking the place of my 3DS but it's still cool to have options.

Never in a million years did I expect that I would be able to play a game like Dirt 3 on my current cell phone and have it be functional.

Support for iOS and Windows Phone devices is on the way, but currently only Android is supported.

You can now get it to work fairly easily through WINE, but OnLive has also said official Linux support is incoming.

I'll wait for an actual deb release rather than jury rigging wine to do it. People say Steam works through wine too and I've yet to see it work at an acceptable level on my system.

I have gotten OnLive to work with no problems, for the most part. It took me longer to get the OS to work with my F510 controller than the OnLive launcher itself.

for the hell of seeing how it works, I installed onlive on my roommate's PC. Doesn't work too well. Mouse controls are pretty terrible. There's a delay and you've got to ramp the sensitivity way down for it to be bearable.

So pretty much fuck onlive.

There doesn't seem to be any middle ground with OnLive. Either it works exactly as advertised as it does for me or it just totally blows.

Could have something to do with geography. I have no idea where OnLive's servers and shit are, but I have noticed that most of the people (on this forum) complaining about it are in the American Southeast.

While I still have no interest in OnLive, that is pretty sweet. THAT would make those Android tablets far more appealing then an Ipad I think.

Well, they still can't unless you use a Bluetooth controller with it. Like I said, the games work but I'd rather vomit out my own internal organs than play with those horrible touch controls. Games only work well with touch when they are designed with them in mind, rather than shoehorning the touch controls onto games that were designed for a keyboard/gamepad.

A 3DS still offers a lot more than an Onlive-enabled phone or tablet. Analog stick, d-pad, dedicated buttons, touch screen, front and rear facing cameras, 3D screen, motion controls, mic input, backwards compatibility with DS, and most importantly games that were designed with the hardware in mind. At best a phone gives you the touch, motion, cameras, and mic.

Biggest issues are in the Southeast, you say? That's strange, given that I don't seem to have any major issues with OnLive (principle of the whole idea aside).

Mind you, there's no way I'd play a competitive FPS (much less Unreal Tournament 3) through it with the slight input lag, but something like Deus Ex: Human Revolution is quite playable.

I don't notice any input lag on OnLive. I'm sure it's there, but I noticed no difference in responsiveness playing Braid via OnLive or locally (via the Indie Bundles) using my F510.

For whatever it's worth, OnLive claims to offer similar input lag to what one would get with a wireless console controller. Never seen anything to verify that, so who knows.

It seems clear that SOMETHING is highly variable here, whether it's with respect to geographic location, ISP, connection speed, or whatever. Hopefully as the technology matures it gets more consistent.

I've played plenty of games with my mouse. Even Unreal seemed to be perfectly playable.

I haven't experienced any noticeable lag in the last few months or so in any game. Granted, I would say I spend a maximum of 3-4 hours a week using the service so I'm not on it a lot, but it has performed better than expected for me.

At best a phone gives you the touch, motion, cameras, and mic.
Just because you personally don't like touch controls doesn't mean that it's not a feasible alternative for people. I have zero problem with touch controls myself.

And since when is the 3DS the de facto comparison point for non-gaming devices? The goddamn PSP has nothing special about it other than physical buttons. A phone has touch controls, an accelerometer, cameras, and a microphone, as you pointed out. If people can have a "true gaming experience" on the PSP, they sure as hell can on a phone, with or without OnLive (although OnLive is a big selling point).

Recently iOS devices have gotten a shitton of outstanding games that surpass the simple play-for-five-minutes-at-a-time games like Angry Birds. There's original stuff like Infinity Blade II (look it up, it's awesome), Bullet Time, Epoch, Aquaria, and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery. Not to mention, quality ports or remakes or brand-new installments of established games like Grand Theft Auto III, Sonic CD, World of Goo, Dead Space, Chrono Trigger, Need for Speed, and many more.

Face it, non-dedicated devices are about to get very relevant very fast.

I have played Infinity Blade and it sucks ass.

Touch controls will never replace buttons and analog. Especially with capacitive screens as with most phones and tablets, the precision isn't there. And that is to say nothing about the tactile feedback as well as not blocking your view with your fingers. The DS/3DS touch screen has pixel-perfect accuracy and its status as a secondary display means you have access to said precision without blocking your view of the game action.

I used the 3DS as my standard for comparison because it offers the most input options, and is designed specifically with gaming in mind. Games that require precise input like Star Fox, Super Mario 3D Land, Dead or Alive, and BlazBlue still aren't going to work on a phone without some sort of dedicated controller (whether that be via peripheral with the OnLive controller or via a built-in thing like with the Xperia Play [which is good for digital input but still blows for analog]).

Another problem that phones and tablets present is the ever-changing hardware. It's quite different from PC because phones are solid-state devices that generally can't be upgraded, and phones can vary greatly in terms of operating system, control methods, processor speed, RAM, etc. Developers want to target the largest number of users possible and as such won't be able to take advantage of device-specific features.

Compare that to the 3DS where every system essentially has the same capabilities. When a game is designed specifically for a piece of hardware you can get more out of it. Look at what Nintendo was able to get out of the Wii with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. This is not to say that exclusive titles are automatically better than multiplatform titles, but there is something to be said about a focused development experience.

The sales of the 3DS thus far indicate that smartphones and tablets aren't cutting into the handheld space as much as many predicted. The DS sold more than the PS2 as well as every other system ever released and the 3DS is destroying the DS's pace.

I agree that we are trending towards all-in-one devices. I agree that Android/iOS gaming will only get bigger. I agree that for certain types of games, phones can offer similar game experiences to dedicated machines. But in much the same way that consoles have continued to thrive in the face of PC gaming, I believe dedicated handhelds will be around for at least another generation or two. Phones just can't offer the variety of experiences that dedicated machines can at this point in time.

While we're on this topic...here's a Joystiq preview of GTA III on an iPad.

No surprises as to what the chief complaint is there...and this game might actually fare a little better in terms of not totally sucking ass with the controls compared to a certain couple of fighting games, which isn't saying much because the controls still suck.

...Oh god, here's a commenter's ramblings from this Engadget article.

Quote:

It wasn't long ago when PC FPS players laughed at console players for playing FPS with a controller. And I still suck really badly with FPS on X360/PS3 compared to keyboard + mouse. Didn't stop Modern Warfare series to dominate the sales charts on consoles and became the #1 gaming franchise (reaching 1 billion quicker than Avatar the #1 selling movie).

Touch screen gaming is here to stay, just takes time to get used to that is all. I can do all of my combos in Street Fighter 4 volt and I find it to be more than sufficient for most games. The developer needs to optimize the game for touch controls as well. I can actually do more combos in Street Fighter 4 Volt than console versions because complex motions are reduced to a single button tap.

I also think Android touch screens are not as sensitive/smooth as Apple iOS touch screens due to Apple patents and it really shows in games. Apple definitely has an edge in controls/graphics with 4S A5 (Android version seems to be more like the A4 version) but of course loses in screen size unless you are on an iPad 2.

I don't understand the appeal of carrying a separate controller to play games on a tablet or phone. It is either good touch controls or no go for me. I am not carrying a controller with me, and if I am home Airplay with Phone/Tablet as controller is the way of the future.

This game will easily hit the #1 top grossing chart for both app store and Android market, and we will see far more ports. In two years when the baseline hardware is the 4S / Tegra 3, I think we will see games like Skyrim (or at least Morrowind/Oblivion).

It has become easier to download Android phone games online. Several gaming site are offering free games online for the users of android phones. And the good thing is that the games that are your all time favorite and that you like to play on your system can also play at android phones. Because specific gaming version of popular games are now available for android users also.
